Looking at buying an rs4 2019 plate and will be taking one for a test drive soon. However, I took an s4 avant diesel for a test drive and it surprised me how good the acceleration was. Now I’m in two minds which one to go for. The s4 is let down slightly with its bland styling.

Depends on your requirements and the depth of your pockets..
If you are doing big motorway miles then settle for the torque in the diesel S4 and you won’t go too wrong.
If you are keen to turn corners then the RS4 is easily your pick. Just beware of the running costs, especially brake discs and pads and make sure you spec sports exhaust as it’s needed.

What did you go for eventually?

Never owned a S4 Avant diesel but driven enough Audi diesels, however my view of which to go for is coloured by costs. The RS4 does not like passing a fuel station without a stop for the premium stuff, the consumables are very expensive, in fact the overall RS 'tax' can be hefty too. For an every day usable car the RS4 can work, but, head before heart I'd go for the S4.

Mike you’re right - my brother owned an RS4 and he half joked he needed a fuel tanker following him on long journeys. Yes servicing and consumables were commensurate with this high performance car and it eats front tyres without trying.

I’m not expecting our S4 Avant Diesel to be low cost to service but compared to the 911 it’ll be a dream. We don’t drive any of our cars hard which is probably why our A6 Avant Quattro Sport with 200k miles and no breakdowns from new was kept for so long.

We’re just amazed at the S4 fuel economy given the 700nm of Torque and weight of the car. Fingers crossed for trouble free driving ahead.

We’re checking into the original supplying Audi dealership this week to get a new code so we can fully connect to the Audi MMI and activate upgrades and data plans. They’ve also offered to do a multi point check on the car.

To add to what Mike said, the fuel tank (58l) is too small for the RS4's thirst. That said, I have had 37mpg out of it on a motorway run but it still needs frequent fuel stops.

I feel the S cars are in the sweet spot of the Audi range for economy (relative to what they are capable of) and performance.
