So Im booked in for my 38K gearbox service at Audi £225 and brake fluid £65, Option to have done while I wait...…. My local specialist is £25 cheaper but telling me that the fluid must be added when the box is at 37 degree C, Audi didn't mention this and surely cant be doing it this way with the While I wait service.

Is the 37C thing bull or am I safer going with the specialist?

It's very common with a gearbox service to heat the oil to a specific temperature and since the specialist is cheaper I would get it done at his place. If the car is still under warranty I would choose Audi though.

Thanks, I have an aftermarket warranty that stipulates work should be done to manufacturer spec. These guys doo so I should be golden.

It’s normal for most gearbox, manual or auto, oil changes to get it up to a certain temperature.
What normally happens is they fill it up at ambient temp then let it warm up to, in this case, 37 degrees and check the level and top up/release.
Oil changes viscosity, density depending on temp so could be low when cold but when warm it’s at the right level so the level is always measured at a specific temp.

For the sake of £25 I would be getting the work carried out at the Audi dealership.

Worse case and something goes wrong with the gearbox regardless if it was carried out to Audi standards my experience is it will always go against you should you need to get Audi involved, simply not worth it to save £25.

Its not about the £25 saving, id pay £100 more for peace of mind, but Im worried that Audi wont do it properly as they are willing to offer a turn around over 1-2 hours (no way it would cool down enough)

I'm sure the dealership has done loads of s-tronic services, so you'll be fine.

As it's such an expensive part to replace if it fails, defo get it done there for peace of mind.

How do you know the independent guy is going to do it properly, because he told you he will?

My point is that if it is serviced by Audi and it does fail at some point Audi are far more likely to stand over it and have the means to replace the gearbox if needed than an independent place.

On the flip side, you get the independent place to do it and it fails Audi are unlikely to cover it at all even with a warranty as they can just say it was improperly serviced by the independent and it will be up to you and him to prove it wasn’t.
