Bitdi louder sometimes

Ok so I've had my bitdi for a month now and I've noticed the exhaust (resonator) tone is louder at certain times but im unsure why this is.

Can anyone shed some light on this please?

Its probably when its doing a DPF regen.
I've noticed mine has an annoying droning exhaust noise about 1500 rpm when it's doing its regen.

That's exactly it. it's much louder and then when turn engine off the fans stay on for ages. Mine done it twice today. How often should the dpf be regenerating?

It will depend on the type of journeys you do. Lots of short journeys will need more regens. If yours has done it twice in one day then it needs a long run to fully complete. I've found that mine needs a 50 mile uninterrupted motorway run to fully complete. Once I've done that it's usually ok for weeks. If you have access to VCDS you can actually read the soot and ash levels in the DPF. The soot levels build up till it decides to perform a regen and once completed successfully the soot level drops and the ash level will rise very slightly. The DPF has a maximum ash load limit of 327.67gram whereas my current ash volume is only 23.2gram after 50,000 miles so in theory should be good for 600,000 miles.

How often does your car do this?
And when it does do you drive down the motorway for awhile until it completed the cycle

I’ve been using the A6 for the school run lately, which is stop start traffic for 10 miles one way. It will do it’s regen thing once a week with this type of driving. I don’t particularly thing that the regen is completed properly with the speeds I get up to, and the revs I’m using, despite flicking it to sport mode. Lol

I work in the evenings, so on the odd occasion the regen kicks in at night time, I head toward the motorway on the way home and do around 15 miles in sport mode, with 2k revs in 7th gear, don’t remember the speed I’m doing? This usually completes the cycle.

Mine has been trying to do it a couple of times the elastic few days I went out yesterday and stuck it in manual and drove in 3rd at 60mph for a bout 15mins. Hasn't tried it since so happy days. Might look into local companies that cut the insides out and weld em up.

I believe it needs 2k revs to generate the heat?
 
It needs a bit more than 2000rpm to generate the heat required to complete a regen.

I would suggest at least 2500rpm in a low gear such as 4th / 5th.

Also try and find some hills as this will put the engine under more load and thus help generate the heat :)

Has anyone had the dpfs removed on a bitdi? I have read there is 2 on these engines.
I had the dpfs removed on my 2.7tdi A4 and that obviously ended the problem.
Thinking it might be worth doing the same thing with this car!

Be careful of the new MOT laws.....

ANY SMOKE emmited by a diesel is now a failure........

That should help get rid of all the Fords on the road mind :D

My mate told me in his older A5 that he got a display up on screen when his car was doing the regen - new to BiTdi ownership and presume this isn't the case for ours?

Doesn't seem to be the case no.
Mine has tried to regenerate maybe 4 times in the first months ownership. Think it's only completed it twice

That being the case I'll need to enquire into getting access to VCDS to review the levels on mine as currently only doing short 2 x 10-15mins journeys a week so that won't be helping it.

I’ve been doing short journeys after work relocated (6 miles a day), one of the reasons I’ve been wanting to change for petrol. (Bike sometimes but hard to move 2 kids around on one haha)
Been doing that journey for 3 years now and not killed it yet lol and no fault lamp.
Had plenty of failed regens, a run at the weekend normally 20mins is fine to complete the process, and could of times a month a big distance or 2, id say you don’t need it super hot either, just a quick boot to start the process, and normal running is fine ( saying that I do use the full rev range from time to time )A cold winters day will need a bit more to start the process but I’ve had it start within 30 seconds of key on, Re gen process chucks more fuel in hence the sound and from Some of the logs I’ve done, manages its temp very well to keep the burn off at optimum.

How many miles has your car done mate? Do you think the ore miles then more soot and ash build up therefore regen more often

53k now, even with short commute I average 8k a year.
I need to check the ash level come to think of it, last year it was pretty non existent
