Hey Guys I have joined yesterday so apologies for getting on right away with a problem.Don't mean to be rude. Was gonna join up anyway.
A4 3.0TDI (242) Quattro manual.Has been mechanically perfect for last 6 months and 8K miles. However after some very enthusiastic cross country jousting yesterday the car has developed a buzzing or mechanical whine in or around the gearbox area. Was quite noticeable yesterday...slow drive home!!
Not so bad today but still there. If driven gently no issue but if put under load ie hard acceleration then it reoccurs. But not as badly as before.Seems to disappear after hard braking but comes back after load.
Having checked the service history the gearbox/transmission fluid has not been changed for a good while.
Noise is there regardless of clutch position, and when coasting and gets worse at speed so I think it could be a front differential issue.Pretty sure it is not engine related.
I wonder if this is a known issue or if anyone else has come across this.Or if anyone can shed some light.
Obviously I have fingers crossed that a transmission fluid flush/change and more gentle driving may help.

I am off to work so please bear with me with any responses or thanks.

Break it to me gently!!!

S-tronic gear oil should be changed every 40k about a £200 job at dealer. It is a specialist job

Cheers it is getting checked over on Wednesday.Seriously hoping its a wheel bearing or similar. Its a manual Quattro but will definitely be looking to get the transmission fluid changed if I can.Had differing opinions about it being a sealed unit etc.Sounds like a dealer job anyway.
Still driving ok just a speed related noise from wheels or drivetrain.

Hey all.Turns out it was a N/S/F wheelbearing and hub replacement.Which is what I was hoping for.Never had a wheelbearing go before so have not heard that previously. So the moral is don't ask for opinions from yer mates in da pub.Always a worst case scenario with sharp intakes of breath.
Nice to have the car back to normal,it's such a nice drive.
