Hi

I was told when buying my S3 that it was a 2 year service interval, after having my S3 about 15 months and done just over 12,000 miles it has come up saying it needs an oil change.

I rang my dealership up and they have quoted £282.00 which seems expensive to me (I know its an Audi), my question is really, what do they do on this oil change service? Do they literally just change the oil and filter? do I get a stamp in my service book to say its been done?

Am I best paying that to get Audi to do it or take it my friends garage for him to change the oil?

In my country they do 1 year / 9000 miles / 15000 kilometers oil change intervals. They change oil and filters only also and it costs about 100-120 Euros.

if you want your engine to last you need to do it a minimum of every 10,000kms....5,000 kms is better, especially if you drive it hard and have modified the engine ECU.

Sorry to say but Audi have got you by the balls!

If you want to keep the warranty on the engine then you MUST stick to their service schedule that should be in your service book when given the car

Get it done by an Audi specialist who use genuine Audi parts. Keeps your warranty that way, and will be under £90 for that.

I used a main dealer for my first service/oil change at 12 months, I paid just over £200 (yearly service as I do under 10k). It's an oil change and a few checks...that's it, no filters or brake fluids! Other members on here have been charged about £7 to top up the washer bottle as well...so if you do take it to them fill it up and take a pic of it full!

You can however get it done by someone else other than an Audi main dealer and keep your warranty, as long as you follow their rules! This is the reply I received from Audi UK when I asked about getting it done by an Audi specialist:

As you can see it's much cheaper going to a specialist, these are the quotes from Audi for my second service:

Cheshire Oaks Audi: £365
Crewe Audi: £401.19
Liverpool Audi: £439.80

I got it done via 'Unit20' who is an Audi specialist for £220. They also gave me a service book with their stamp in it, I then took that book back to the main dealers to get them to stamp it to say they did my first service ;) No service book comes with new cars, it's all logged on PC!!! No good to a private buyer or non Audi garage as they can't see the Audi system! So a book and receipts is handy to prove it's all been done :)

When I first bought the car I thought I'd pay the extra and get Audi to do everything, thinking that way the PX price would be kept high....wrong, Audi offer you less than anyone for your car no matter if you service it with them or not! 'We buy any car' are offering £1,000 more than some of the quotes I've had from Audi!

I got my dealer to match a local quote, came down from £269 to £159

Charging £269 for some oil and a filter is insane

Nowadays with oil technology as it is the above no longer applies, plenty of analysis done on modern oils and their impact on engine life. If you like doing it then no worries and fill ya boots. Ironically stop start traffic in hot humid conditions (e.g. Panama) can work an engine harder than using the full rev range with decent air flow.

Either suck it up (people like to see Audi looking after Audis) or specialist as per S32B, as for whether Audi do a better job......................

My dealer schedules a change every 10k under my 3 year maintenance coverage...my car is modified quite a bit, plus traffic, plus hot weather, plus heavy right foot = change every 5k not cos I like to, but rather safeguard my engine and not rely solely on Audi service muppets here who may or (frequently) may not do their job properly

Mines is going in tomorrow 1.4 tfsi a3 first oil change, audi wanted £290, audi specialist are doing it for £110

Actually, if you have only done 12K miles in 15 months you should really be on fixed service schedule (ie annual)

I'm considering doing the oil and filter change myself. Apparently the car has a plastic composite sump and sump plug which is easily damaged so a lot of dealers use the suction technique to suck the old oil out via the dipstick hole. The vacuum oil extractors are not that expensive (around £50) and of course they can be used again and again. Using this technique there is no need to get under the car. The filter housing can be opened with a 32mm socket (around £10). So for a first oil change, even buying an oil extractor, socket, oil and new filter I could do it for £100-£110. Subsequent changes would just be the cost of oil and new filter. I'll let Audi do actual services but for just the oil change it seems a bit lazy for me not to do and keep the money saved for something more interesting -gin for instance. I can keep the receipts to prove the correct oil and filter was used and write the oil change date on the receipt. The oil change interval can be reset by the user in the MMI.

Wow that's steep! Mine is due a service in 3000 miles, so it will need one before I change to an RS. It costs more for long life servicing, less for yearly/10k.

Bridgend Audi quoted £155 for an oil change and £250 for an inspection service which cycles every other on either 10k or 1 year! Absolute bargain for a performance car.

If the warning to do it has come up you need to plug it into the pc thing to turn it off.

The problem is normally the oil service shows something like 1,000 mile and then the inspection service shows 1900 mile....so be careful they don't put them together and hit you in one hit! £405 which comes close to the quotes I was getting.

No my oil service says 12,000 miles and then 18,000 for the inspection. But if I change to yearly, the schedule will change and you can't be caught out because it is fixed.
