Climate Control Settings

The air conditioning compressor has died on my 1995 A4, and although this doen't bother me too much (its cold enough this time of year), I was wondering if there is anyway that when you press AUTO, the unit doesn't call for air-con or display the snow-flake?
Can I do this by using the interface on the unit itself (ie recirc and arrow)?

Its a minor annoyance having to press the snow-flake after AUTO everytime I know, but now its starting to bug me!
