I have a dodgy starter and before it breaks altogeher I would like to get a new one. The car is a 3.0 TDI quattro, 204 bhp with Tiptronic gearbox, so if it dies anywhere other than at home it will be a car transporter job to get it to a garage, otherwise I could probably do it myself , which would at the very least be much cheaper. I have had a look on E.Bay, ECP and GSF but ended up more confused than when I started. There seem to be two very different types for the 3 litre, one does a lot of 2 litres as well but even using my Reg No. (SM55 GNK) I can't identify which one I need, so I would still appreciate the information if anyone can lay their hands on it.
Here are examples of the 2 styles/diagrams I am getting, one the starter is quite conventional looking, like this; AUDI A4 B7 2005 - 2008 2.7 TDI 3.0 TDI MANUAL STARTER MOTOR 059911024 | eBay where when fitted the curved end part will be out of sight, in the bellhousing and the other where the starter end is quite flat at the end, almost as if none of it will protrude into the bellhousing of the gearbox, this type; Audi A4 A6 Seat Skoda Superb Exeo VW 2004-2008 2.0 TDI Starter Motor 03G911023 | eBay.
Both are listed for some 2.0 TDIs and some 3.0 TDIs. Surely this doesn't mean they both fit? I would doubt it but I can't make sense of it myself and the online parts catalogues are not specific enough either, anyone have access to any VAG catalogues to confirm exactly which one?

Hi Desertstorm, Thanks for the info, I already tried Audi 7zap, it was the only online catalogue I have that still works and I was getting 2 part numbers but couldn't seem to narrow it down any more. Someone gave me an ETKA link and it's easier to narrow down to 059 911 024GX but if it is the starter I think it is, then the diagram on the page is not for my starter but that's possible as component wise I doubt they will differ much.
Then there is E.Bay, ones that seem to be correct, when I type in the detals of the car it says it doesn't fit and the ones that I don't think are correct, it says do and that's where all the confusion lies.
I think you probably can't really go with the E.Bay checkers so putting that aside, I now have a part number but I am thinking to be on the safe side, I will still maybe just remove the old one first, then either get one the same or get that one reconditioned. It means it will be off the road for a few days but I have more than enough vehicles so shouldn't be a great problem, I just think with an Audi I should be able to get the actual number and the exact correct part before a spanner is laid on it or am I missing something?

I always ignore the cars fitted section on Ebay, quite often it is incorrect. The part number is what matters.
If you were to goto the dealers they would know exactly what the part number was, Most of the big car spares places would also be able to work put what part number would be required. Don't bother trying to look for a part number that ends in X . This means it a manufacturer exchange item.
The part number is 059911024 or 059911024G more than likely 059911024

OK thanks for that, I did manage to get what I think is the correct part number and verified it myself, cross matched by engine code, so pretty sure now. Unfortunately in the interim period I had to make a quick decision about a reconditioned one that was for sale. So having bought that and got the right number, guess what, wrong starter. Anyway, made a decison to put it onto my local garage to get it done, noises were getting worse and I just ran out of time. So they were working on it today, I gave them the new one I bought but they have also ordered a recon one from their suppliers from the car details and if mine looks like it will fit they are going to use that and just return the other but if it's deffinitely wrong then I will get the recon one and mine back to re-sell. Hope fully all will be decide tomorrow, will keep you posted ;)

Well a saga has ensued following my starter woes. I have just got the car back today after 7 days in the Garage, small local country garage where I get MOTs and things done when I can't manage them myself for one reason or another.
The stater I bought was in fact the wrong one as I had suspected but the recon one the garage got in, didn't fit either. They sent another and it too didn't fit. When I say didn't fit, it fitted the space and bolted up but there was a rubbibng noise when the car was running which would go away if the tightness of the bolts was backed off. On inspection the gear wheel was slightly longer than the original, so probably rubbing on the back of the flywheel behind the ring gear.
The choice I was given at this point was recondition the original (several days off the road) or buy a brand new one from Audi. I had already priced the new one and I didn't think it was too bad at just over £200 so we went for that. Problem was TPS didn't have one is stock and so it took 2 days to come. It is now starting and running perfectly, the bill was a bit higher than I first thought but to be honest given the hassle they had and the fact it was a brand new starter, it could have been much worse.
I had looked into doing the job myself but not that seriously, enough however to see it wasn't that simple and maybe to start it at the side of the house at this time of year wasn't the best idea. The Garage took a driveshaft off and disconnected some of the offside suspension to get access but this meant the car was then stuck on a ramp in the garage while all the to-ing and fro-ing took place with starters and they couldn't use the ramp for anything else, which when you only have 2 ramps is a bit of an issue. The motor factors they use are upset about the incorrect recon units and are assuring us they were the correct items, per the OE part number etc but you can see the difference in an I-phone picture so we are not talking small figures, more a few mm.
Anyway I have my baby back and brand new Audi starter, so I am not that worried about anyone else or it stopping in some car park miles from anywhere and needing towed to a Garage as it is an automatic.
My advice to anyone with a similar problem would have to be, if you can afford the new Audi unit, buy it. An Audi specialist may have been a better bet for getting the job done, this is dubious but they would likely have better info and know the pitfalls. Main pitfall is getting the acurate OE part number then the part but even with this recon units may not fit without some modification.
I hope this helps others who may read this and thanks to all who offered info and advice, cheers and even though I didn't get my hands dirty I am so glad it's over and realising how much I missed the car, that wasn't supposed to happen
