Hello, I am having issues with an annoying clunking/clicking sound coming from the steering rack area on my 2001 A3 1.9TDI.
Now I have recently fitted a sports suspension kit but I had this problem before but I thought it had gone away.

Could it be a CV joint? it sometimes happens when I brake or accelerate and also when reversing.

My mechanic said wishbones but I had those replaced end of last year...

Could it be bushes need replacing? The sound is definitely coming from the steering rack area.

I am not bothered about cost as every car I have is a project.

Any help appreciated

If it's the cv joint it will be worse on full lock and even worse on full lock in reverse.

My CV joints have been doing this since I got my car, especially when reversing around corners. they don't feel wobbly or loose though and the passenger side one looks quite new. I think it is the drivers side - you can buy whole drive shafts.

Thanks for your replys.
I will mention this to my mechanic as it needs sorting out.

I did noticed it was worse when on full lock also

Complete driveshafts are available new on eBay for about £40.
