Hi guys, I'm new in this section being a new owner of a b6, but have been around on the A3 section a bit as I have two 8P's and had an original shape one as well, as well as an A6 C4 and an A4 B5. I bought my B6 a couple of months back. Been looking to get another A4 for a while and fancied the B6. This one was a steal 2002 52 plate, 1.9tdi 6 speed, but came with a loud whining gearbox.

Ive been looking at the overhaul kits and I'm not too impressed with the prices. Does anyone know what the bearing numbers are, ie the ID code stamped on them, not the audi part numbers. I should be able to get the bearings from my local specialist bearing suppliers for a fraction of the cost.

I'm going to get some oil tomorrow and change it for now, partly to see what comes out with the oil and partly because its probably never been done. I'm guessing that the bearing that is worst and probably causing the most noise is the one that carries the diff pinion, but could also be the diff bearings themselves. Noise is in all gears and first and particularly 2nd gear feel odd to engage indicating a bit of slop in the front of the shaft. (assuming the 1st 2nd cluster is at the front of the box)

Ive rebuilt a few gearboxes now, so im fine to do the work, but would rather get it all done at the same time rather than opening it getting the bearing codes and waiting till i have got the bearings to put oit back together.

thanks in advance, gill
