A3 8p ap coil overs fitted incorrect?

Not sure.
But if that is the NSF, which I suspect it is, the bolt should be the other way round. Point towards the car.

Looking at that pic the tab is only used as a locator as it looks like the strut is fully inserted as it's showing at the bottom
They where that way from factory because I looked before, it is definitely inserted fully. I've got a horrible nock that's started with I thought was drop links loose but it's not, the same sound on my mates car when his kept coming loose.
I said in the pic you can see it's fully inserted and the tab was a locator.
As for the knock how low have you got it? If you put them too low you tend to get the anti roll bar banging on the driveshaft

I thought it was drop links aswell because my mate had the same noise but they are all tight and I've raised it to 40mm from s line and still bad noises on ruff ground
