hey guys have recently bought a 2001 s3 amk engine - had engine management light come on last week and gave error code once read of P0012- which as u probably kno is "A" camshaft position - timing over-retarded (bank 1) - wiped code engine management light gone off but engine making tapping noise at idle- have now literally just changed cam position sensor but tapping noise still there just drove it down the road engine management light flashing and lack of power -- any ideas ?!? (Coil pack is on recall and is being changed by Audi 9th may)

Faulty VVT Tensioner is the reason this happens most of the time... I suspect you need a new one... does the tapping noise come and go as you rev?

Yup 100% correct !! Tapping noise but when u drive it noise goes away
Expensive ? Cheap ? To fix?!?

400ish quid for a new VVT unit from Audi or 250ish for one from GSF, new VVT gasket set (fiver)

Need to undo the inlet cam to swap out

Thanks
So it's the cam adjuster that's faulty rather than the chain tensioner?!? Cos I can get a chain tensioner from Audi for £7 ?!?!

Cam adjuster is £420 at Audi but a pattern ones £100 ?!?

It's the whole unit that needs replacing mate... The 400 quid option...

Don't buy a copy part from ebay though... These just don't work... Cheapest option is the GSF one...

I have had one fitted for some time...

Ok thanks - so what's so different about the gsf one then - just checked gsf do one for £270 or £113 ?!?

Guessing £113 ones a pattern

The cheaper one is probably the non vvt one... You need the more expensive one mate... Sorry

Thanks for your help on that topic
But just wondering do u kno how the front grill comes out of front bumper ?!? Do I need to remove bumper or can it be done with out removal ?!?

Thanks
