Hi Danny and welcome to the Forum. Well the BRE engine has got a bit of rep' am afraid but so do many others, however, you may be one of the lucky ones. What condition is it in......does it have a service history, how many miles has it done etc auto or manual.

83.000 full history cam belt and pump done , the engine is really smooth a quiet but i am going to get it booked into my local independent audi garage Auditechnic they can take off the sump and replace the hex drive for a few hundred quid.

That's a good plan. Spend a few hundred now, avoid the risk of a few thousand later.
