I had a warning on the dash this morning about number plate light out and it was both of them. so i call into halfords as i was near got 2 new bulbs. Got home fitted them both of them and nothing. Still have a warning say there out. Is there any other way to check if the holders have gone. I have looked but no sign of damage

Try battery of, then on as a reset.
Grab a torch & check the contacts inside for corrosion, rust etc, clean where necessary & then do as above again.
