2.0T FSI Oil Consumption - Piston design?

So we all know about 2009-2011 A4/A5/Q5 1.8/2.0 TFSI's with CDN engine codes suffering from oil consumption issues.

So what actually causes it?

From what I have heard it is piston design leading to oil scraper ring failure. In particular the proximity of the ring to the gudgeon pin.

Well attached are two images, one of a 2010 CDN TFSI piston (flawed design) and one of a 2007 TFSI piston (non flawed).

Can anyone 'qualified' state what the problem is? I can guess from looking at the pictures but would like to hear a qualified response.

Additionally does anyone have a picture of the new modified CDN pistons that Audi fit to solve this problem? It would be good to see what Audi changed.

Hummmm, yes I'd reckon that I can see what you are inferring, I would think an over heated over worked oil control ring might well take advantage of that "escape route".
