Clicking sound when connecting to ECU

Hi,

I have not been able to connect to my Golf mk4 ECU. I just hear a slow clicking sound from behind the dash whenever I try.

I have tried vcds lite with an ebay cable and an ELM bluetooth device with the paid version of Torque for android. Vcds lite gave me connection errors, however it stated that the latency was good. Torque said my phone was paired and connected to the ELM bluetooth device, but that it could not talk to the ECU.

I need to scan for some error codes as the engine has been idling rough with drops in power and shudders now and again.

AGU engine? Will only connect with VDCS or clone, it will not work on torque.
