Hi everyone,
I'm new to the forum and have just brought a 2004 Allroad 2.5tdi Auto.
It's a great car and has 138K on the clock but I have a gearbox problem the seller failed to tell me about.
What happens is this:
When in D and coming down from 5th to 4th with your foot off the gas it makes an almighty clunk as it downshifts. It feels horrible like you've just driven over a brick.
When I use it in tiptronic mode it will do the same thing if I don't have any load or revs on it. As long as I change down while accelerating it's fine.
I have dropped the belly pan out and changed the fluid which was in good condition but someone has been at it before as the gasket is quite new. Refilled and got it up to temperature and it still does the same thing.
I did some investigation and found out that an auto specialist has already worked on it and they have apparently fitted a second hand valve block but I'm not sure how true this is. They didn't inspire me with confidence when I spoke to them?
I took the car to JT automatics in Erith and they had a look at it and found no electronic faults and took the car out for a drive and couldn't make it do it. Judging by the revised MPG figure I dont think they idled at all!!! However, they suggested that the gearbox was lucky to get this far and a rebuild is necessary which would be just shy of £2K.
Has anybody got any ideas or has had a similar experience? I am driving around manually at the moment for fear of doing any long term damage. The car has been very well looked after and has definately had money spent on it from previous owners and I'd say the gearbox was a bridge too far....Hence how a trader managed to pass it on to me
Appreciate any help.
Thanks
Toby
