Anyone My laptops has crashed and its making loads of harddrive clicking sounds. It don't boot up and the bios isn't detecting it. I've chckec the drive its a ibm harddrive. I need the data off it, can anyone suggest or help... got some cash in my pocket if u can help ..

Do you still have any of the disks that would have come with the laptop when new?
If so there may be some utilities on there. If any of them are bootable, you can run the utilities yourself and may be able to fix the problem, otherwise you can take the laptop to a specialist company that can get the info off the drive for you (if you need the info that badly that is).

Chucky where are you based mate? Might be possible to retrieve data using an adapter so you can connect the laptop drive harddrive as a slave using your pc! Here's a link to Maplins they aint expensive and seems like an easy way to access or run repairs on the faulty HD. If you have anymore questions please ask. Good luck.

Can give a temporary new lease of life to faulty hard disks,
enough time to copy off important data.

Have a look on Google for "freezer hard drive".

I have done this myself a few times and have managed to retrieve data.

never heard that one before. I have a clicking one that I managed to get the data off before it got too bad. Sounds like the reader arms wacking off the casing /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Your hard drive is definatly fadged. The clicking noise is the head trying to calibrate itself.
You can try the freezer thing, but from my experience it has never worked.

The best thing to do is to use a data recovery company, who will generally take out the disks and put them in a working drive. But be prepared to pay in body parts.

As a last resort, i would drop the drive onto a table or someting from about 5cm, whilst connected to the pc and powered. I say last resort, becuase you can do some serious damage to the disk doing this.
