intermitant tinny sort of ticking sound on start up

as the titel says fella's
my avant tdi sport 130 has developed a sort of tinny, ticking sound on start up,,
ive noticed it only seems to do it when the engine is started from cold !

and ive also noticed the same, if not very similar noise when setting off in 2nd gear, or crawling in 3rd ect !!!!

i know the latter is not something you do regularly but when hitting the wrong gear i noticed that noise so thought id mention it !!!

has anyone had similar problems???

On the s3's its quite common for the oil pick up pipe in the sump to become partially blocked and cause oil starvation to the top of the engine. I'm about to drop the sump (about 20 bolts) replace the pickup pipe (2 bolts & £14) and replace the sump with new sealant. Its very common for the pickup to be blocked on cars running long life servicing. Signs are a tappety, tractor noisy when starting up from cold which sounds possibly similar to your symptoms. Also tempted to do my a4 130 pd but not sure how bad the problem is on these engines...
