Hi, im new to the site and hope to get some advice on a problem im having with my 1997 A3 auto.
I have had the car about a year now and really love it! Iv had very little problems with it until recently.... I have found that the car tends to linger in first gear a little too long when i pull off, but for the second time today it refused to leave first gear at all? I had been driving about the city for a few hours, as i pulled off at the lights the car would not shift up from first gear (looked like a learner driver out for the first time!!) i managed to pull over and rest the car for a few mins. After pulling off the second time the car shifted as normal for a few mins and then droped back to first gear, i managed to get back to my workshop and on lifting the bonnet noticed the engine was very hot (although the temp guage read 90).
This same thing happened to me two weeks ago, once again engine hot, a friend from a garage advised me to check the gearbox oil level and we decided to drain it and refil it (with the correct trans oil) and the problem seemed to stop until today.
I have vag-com and the cable to check faults and on running a scan came up with
01192 - Torque Converter Lock-Up Clutch
04-10- Mechanical Malfunction - Intermittent
Im not sure if overheating could cause such a fault or if it is something more serious?
I hope none of you have had such a problem but if you have, any info or advise would be much appreciated.
Oh and sorry for such a long post , its my last hope before i take the car for an expensive check-up!
Cheers
Karl
