Stereo de-coding?

Thinking of putting my standard headunit in as my sony keeps playing up, im 99% sure i dont have the code for my old unit, if I havent got it, what do I do?

I'm pretty sure the dealers can lookup the radio code from the cars VIN - not sure what they'd charge for doing so though...
