Since I bought my car (a '98 FWD 1.8T) I have been driving around on a combination of factory shocks and lowered springs fitted by a previous owner. At least, I assume they were springs because they might as well have been concrete blocks. The ride was appalling - even the tiniest bump or dip in the road was teeth-shatteringly awful. I mean, good-god-did-that-pothole-break-my-wheel-in-half dreadful.

Although some of the problem was due to a loose suspension arm I figured the only way to truly sort it was by changing everything. My budget was non-existent and anything I did would bash a credit card already nearing it's limit.

After toying with the idea of refitting new factory springs (which would cost in the region of £150 from Eurocarparts) I instead opted for JOM coilovers. I hadn't read any horror stories but was warned I could get what I paid for...

Now, after £160 for the coliovers (from DPM - thanks Damian, who was extremely helpful), £200 for a local specialist to fit and £30ish for new top mounts and bearings the ride is transformed.

True, I asked for them to be set at their highest setting (around 30mm lower than standard) and you could argue that defeats the purpose of such suspension but to be honest I couldn't give a monkeys.

The ride is still firm but the car feels transformed - I can feel actual damping over bumps, the car doesn't rock like a fairground ride when I brake and I can now actually use my driveway without being grounded on the pavement. Best of all, I will actually be able to drive about a newborn passenger (when they arrive) without firing them out the sunroof should I ever go over a speedbump. If I wasn't on 17in alloys with relatively low profile tyres it would no doubt be more confortable still.

So, rather than my usual posts moaning that something is broken (although, I am still trying to rectify boost problems) I thought I would share my opinions and hopefully answer any fears other forum users might have about fitting such cheap kit. Okay, so I'm only a week in but a new set-up for less than £400 is certainly an option others will have considered. For the light use the car gets, I'm sure it should hold up fine.

So, not quite in the words of Katy Perry - I fitted JOM and I liked it...

ye i got the same ones a couple of months back and they have been superb

"your so gay and you dont even like boys"............. Katy Perry

Being serious for a moment tho.. Having also bought a cheap coily kit a few years ago for my wifes 1.8t lupo, it was at first a bargain..
2 dampers popped later after 3 years, is I suppose what you get for your money. Its now back on its old bilsteins and eibachs and is faultless just sits a little higher nmow.

Hoping the JOM are reliable long term for you.

I can't say what it would ride like at the lowest setting but for my needs, the highest it can go suits me fine.

I had fitted what I could afford. You could always argue 'buy cheap, buy twice' but for a car that cost just over two grand to buy, I didn't want to spend more than I had to. As time goes on I will let people know how they hold up. And, once it stops chucking it down, maybe take a few snaps so you can see how it sits.

Just thought it would be good for other users to hear from someone who had fitted JOM rather than the "My friend had so-and-so and they were crap because he said this-and-that" stories I kept reading on the 'net when I was looking for opinions before fitting them myself!

hmm ive been looking at changing from my standard set up on my quattro because the ride sounds exactly like yours was! bone shattering!! my duaghter was only born yesterday and waiting to come home from the hospital and im absolutely dreading it because of the appauling ride quality! may well look into getting some of said coilovers!! thanks mate!

what is the country of origin for JOM?
Belgium? ****?

I think a lot of the cheap kits are made in the same factory, VMaxx, Jamex, AP, etc etc

JOM kits are German, with TUV approval and 2 years warranty. I'm sure a lot of these kits are rebranded from elsewhere, though.

Their website doesn't do them any favours, mind. It looks like an advert in an early 90's issue of Fast Car...!

I will add for quattro1 (congratulations, by the way) that the ride is firmer than standard but my car was ruined with a bad lowering spring/factory shock combination. As I found out when they were replaced, the springs must have lowered around 90mm and the front shocks were completely knackered. Not good.

I'm not in the position to say how JOM stuff compares to OE because I've never owned the car or driven one with all-round factory suspension! But it IS loads better than what I had before...

ha thanks mate just got her home today and im definately changing my suspension, ill just give the jom coilovers a go because they seriously cant be any worse than what i have at the moment, ive got 45 profile tyres so its not them adding to the problem. the ride really, truely is stiff as a pervert in a playground!

nice one for doing this thread, helped make up my mind
