Can anyone point me in the direction of any build threads for 8L S3 with 07K/Rs3/TTRS engine? Are there any owners on here?

That’s the dream mate... that’d be the engine I’d put in mine for sure! I think a few years ago, storm developments.

*Edit*
Knew I saw it somewhere

Yes and the soundtrack is something else, I currently have a common rail 170 tdi in my S3 and need to go back to a petrol engine, I can’t stand the smelly Diesel engine any longer.

That sir! Is something different.... why did you drop that in it? I remember going to an Audi test drive day about 6 years ago.

The cars there were an R8 V8, R8 V10 Spyder, RS5 and the TTRS! My favourite of the day was the TTRS! Sounded amazing, power delivery was rapid and really pushed you into the seat!

I was doing more miles back then and needed something cheaper to run but loved my s3 too much to change the car so I changed the engine to suit my needs. It’s no longer my daily so I’m looking at options again

Thanks for the link to that one, it looks like a USA spec 2.5 naturally aspirated engine that’s been turbocharged.

That’s dedication to the S3 8L for sure! Oh by the way thanks for your assistance with warren with the steering wheel, etc. Your welcome on the link.... if you do drop in the 2.5 5 cylinder engine, do a build thread

You must have been doing intergalactic miles for that engine swap to make financial sense.

But it did make financial sense for me, I did all the work myself, I bought the cat B donor car at a good price and sold the parts that I was not going to use, also sold my s3 engine and recovered most of the cost of the conversion.

The A/S3 in the link has an turboed 07K engine.. the benefits of running a 07K engine with a turbo is that it is a port-injected engine, instead of a direct-injected engine like the RS3/TTRS engines.
So modding it is easier and cheaper: drop in some rods and pistons, slap on a nice turbo, upgrade the injectors, intercooler and downpipe and remap it..
I have a full big-turbo setup for sale for the NA engines:

Iroz Motorsport tubilair manifold, big Xona rotor 8267 turbo(fully V-banded and with upgraded Tial wastegate), Bosch flow-matched 1200cc injectors, intake tube, gaskets and Tial Q 50mm bov

Recovered enough of the cost to make it worthwhile rather than just driving the 1.8t at lower speed/throttle, empty boot etc? Seems a very drastic measure when the cost of fuel in reality isn’t that large unless you’re doing very high miles. Then you’ve got to change the engine back when you eventually come to sell it, unless you can find someone who wants a tdi s3 8l. But if it worked for you then fair dues, just seems an odd thing to do from my point of view.

If I had to pay full price to a breaker for a complete cr170 engine with all ancillaries, loom, ecu etc and then pay a specialist to fit it for me then it wouldn’t have made any sense at all.

A ttrs/rs3 engine isn’t going to make financial sense either but that’s more acceptable to most people! I’m going to need help with this conversion (if it goes ahead) and I cannot do all the work myself this time due to health reasons.

I think it’s a good effort on syncros part dropping that engine tdi engine in. Let’s face it.... how many people have done it? One for the record books I say. But hell yes do the 2.5 5 cylinder conversation! Not that my input is much help on it, I’ll help where I can haha.

When I 1st joined this forum I remember someone doing a tdi s3 conversion think he was in Europe somewhere and he thought it was a good idea to chop the s3 badge add the td badge together driving round with a std badge haha

that’s my car, I won’t have an STD much longer I hope, people’s reactions to the badge was funny!

Like I said, fair dues, it’s definitely different, it just doesn’t make sense to me. Putting a 2.5 in doesn’t either really but I respect people that do these things and I find it interesting. Putting something like a 2.5 in is about going faster, which never financially makes sense but it’s a hobby. Doing an engine swap for better economy just seems a waste of money and effort in my opinion but I think it’s probably the first tdi engine in an s3 so fair play.

It wasn’t just all about economy either, I still had 200 bhp, I did not spare it and used to get almost 500 miles to a tank with no major loss of performance compared to the stock 210bhp amk, the common rail engine is much quieter and more refined than the older ve or pd generation engines, I could understand people’s disgust if I had fitted one of those and a few people have passed negative comments but the positive ones were more plentiful, I even had a very generous offer from someone interested in buying it once at a car show.

I didn’t break the unwritten rule of “Don’t build what you can buy” so I think it was worth my (minimal) expense and effort, if for example I had a 1.8t a3 and converted that to pd130 then I’d have broken the rule and built something I could have just bought and that is certainly a waste of time and money.

I have seen a few tdi converted mk1 Audi TT’s but never an s3

Come on chaps, let’s get back on topic now soooooo...... would have to be custom engine and gearbox mounts, driveshafts and what gearbox would you use? DQ500? Can you run that engine with Gen 1 Haldex

Apparently the drivers side engine mount fits straight on the mk4/s3 chassis leg but the gearbox mount and dog bone mount would have to be custom if you were to use a dq500 or mq500 also custom driveshafts would be needed. The o2m can be bolted on if you grind the top of bellhousing to clear the timing chain cover otherwise it will crack and leak oil.

I’d stick with 02m personally to make the running gear side of things that little bit easier. Otherwise a TTRS manual box but then you’re into shafts etc.

As far as I know the port injected 07k is a US motor and we’re stuck with the direct injection 07k, which is no bad thing as they’re much stronger engines out of the box, particularly the later 07k.2/8v.2 (I’ve seen it denoted as that)
