I traced it down to the starter motor in the end so back up and running now but still don't know why the ECU wasn't responding as a starter motor shouldn't effect it, maybe it is doggy as well...

My 05 A3 2.0 TDI BKD engine won't turn over so I hooked up the laptop to it and its not finding any control modules, used another cheap reader and that's the same. So the ECU looks dead but I thought the engine would still turn over just not fire up, anyone know if this is right? Thanks

On VCDS when reading the measuring blocks group 1 it does come up with a rpm when cranking which I think comes from crank sensor but I maybe wrong?

The timing belt looks good, I'm starting to think it might be the crankshaft sensor but don't know how to check that so might just replace it and hope for the best.
