Audi A3 1.8tfsi s-tronic - shocking MPG returned

Hate to flame you down on your first post but 85mph all the way Birmingham from London and were not caning it in your words .....really!!!!

You sound a bit of a boy racer and apart from the fact you are breaking the law even if taking the reading from your speedo why would you expect anything more from your MPG as you obviously bought the car for performance rather than economy.

What planet do you live on, most people drive 80mph+ and in any case 85mph speedo speed is probably nearer 78mph real speed anyway - hardly a boy racer

bet you've exceeded the speed limit - if not, id call you a liar

my 10 year old Peugeot 307xsi averaged 27.9mpg because I drove it quick without a thought about mpg and mostly within the speed limits.

2 years ago I thought id use the Peugeot computer a bit more and in particular the live mpg reading - it was quite amazing how much affect the right foot had. Being sceptical with the computer readings I thought id try and keep the mpg up. Within 6 months my mpg jumped up from 27.9mpg (mpg for 9.5 years) to 31mpg (mpg for 10 years). Might not seem a lot but if I had done that since new im sure the mpg would have been well over 40mpg

Hi, I also return about 32mpg if I drive my present car at 85mph on cruise, but then I can also get 57mpg if I drive the car carefully. That's the difference really, 85mph is just too fast to expect good mpg as the car is trying to shift all that air in front of it..

Mmmm,

Thanks for the input guys.

I kind of resent the boy racer comment, I guess Daveotto is atleast 80 and clearly he never goes beyond 70 on the motorway, please do get points applied to my licence! Prejudices aside, the basis for this post is that the other car in the family is a 2007 A4 2.0 TFSI and we get what's quoted as a combined figure, it's general usage is in line with this A3. This is the main source of my alarm and I'm not seeing consistency in that respect. I have only done 3k soo far, so let's see what we are getting after 10k miles more. I was expecting roughly 38mpg-40mpg combined or something nearer to SFTDI's experience but maybe this is optimistic.

Ownership aside has been a lovely experience and I am extremely glad I went for MMI 3g and B&O. I was wondering if at the time I would miss out not going for S-Line (went the Sport route) and I don't feel like I am. Saturday morning car wash still happens which after this length of time is a good thing and the car still smells new :) haha! Feel like I should have got cruise control however.

Anyhow, thank you all for your comments, boy-racer aside. I think I may just need to reign in my expectations from an MPG perspective.

Hi mate.. I'm planning on buying a A3 S-Line too but confused on whether to get the 1.4COD or 1.8 like yours, May I ask how many miles do you get on a full tank? and has the MPG improved? I'll be mostly doing start/stop and London driving.

"On motorway driving - trip to Birmingham from London got me 40.4mpg and this was a poodle session at 85mph the whole way."

Sounds about right to me to be honest. In my experience in quite a few cars the mpg drops by roughly 10% when doing 80mph instead of 70, and similar going from 60 to 70 etc. The extra urban figure is done I believe at 56mph and at fairly warm ambient temp which also makes a difference in wind resistance over freezing temperatures where air is a lot more dense. Have you ever played badminton and had the shuttles flying out the back of the court in the summer, but struggling to get to the back of the court in cold winter? Same thing.

Short journeys are also a killer on mpg. Until the engine oil is up to proper running temperature, after about 10 minutes or so of driving, it will not be running very efficiently. Stop / start is also a killer so lights, traffic, roundabouts etc they all sap your MPG.

If you are struggling to make good figures during normal driving it may also be because of your driving style. heavy right foot, late braking, unable to maintain speed (speeding up and slowing down a bit all the time, some people unknowingly drive like this), incorrect use of gears, etc. it all makes a difference.

My 1.8 returned an indicated long term average of 42.5 mpg and a calculated 39/40 mpg with mixed driving.
On a long motorway journey travelling at 70/75 with a few 50 stretches the journey average would easily climb to 47, sometimes 50 mpg. It was a FWD manual though and quattro would reduce that by around 5mpg.
If I was doing stop-start London driving though I wouldn't want manual and I'd look at one of the electric washing machines from Japan.

Are you in eco mode , certainly my diesel stronic would only coast ie , knock itself into neutral when going downhill or not loaded, when in eco mode , made about 5mpg of a difference , took me a yr to find that out though.

I think we know it's all down to how we drive it. When I collected my 1.5 manual new last year I took it steady on the way home from Nottingham to Merseyside and it was showing 58.4. Coming back from Devon earlier in the year traffic was heavy and it was showing 71mpg pulling off the M6. I brimmed it when home and it was very high 60's.
584mpg after collected 2019 1600
71mpg return from Devon march 2020 1600
