Hello, I want to do change my water pump on my A3 1.9 tdi 2004 8P BKC. Could someone please give me step by step instructions or at least some important factors to consider while doing this? I've watched numerous videos and read countless threads, I get the jist of it and I'm confident I can manage it, just looking for some help with directions on how to do it and some tips! Many thanks!

The water pump is driven by the cam belt so you need to do them both together. I’ve done cam belts on older engines without time constraints but for newer engines I leave it to the professionals who can do them in 2 or 3 hours, as the other ‘arf needs to be mobile every day.
Figure on a day to fit if you never done one before.

Thank guys, time is not an issue. The belt is fairly new as last owner did it but not the pump. It seems the tensioner is also a cover for the pump? If I remove the 16mm nut, (bang in the middle of the pic) will the tensioner come off? Or does it just move. If it only moves then how do I get to the pump? Also, will the engine need jacking up on this side to remove it? Can I just undo the engine mount on this one side or both sides? Only need a couple inch clearance. Thanks.

I've spent literally, hours trying to find info on this and I'm amazed that there is absolutely nothing for how to change a water pump on a 2004 Audi A3 1.9 TDI. There is for similar engines, similar makes, similar models, NOTHING to help me! I'm so frustrated now.

See if Halfords have a Haynes manual...

**Edit**

my first google attempt returned YouTube posts and ASN forum pages - I suspect you’ve watched/read all these?

My searches havent showed the top one which is most promising, but it still says timing belt which my car doesnt have. I just typed it into youtube and it's not there! The others are wrong engine.

Seeing as you have the time you have a lot more reading to do, you car does have a timing belt.

there’s nothing unique or untold about your 1.9 engine it’s the same as any other PD engine BRM etc etc

1) Remove one side of the engine mount after supporting the engine
2) remove everything after locking the crank at TDC using the right locking tool
3) swap the belt, tensioner and water pump
4) brag

If you have any specific questions then do ask, you need a torque wrench to set the tension of the stud, and water pump and crankshaft balancer bolts. It needs to cover down to 10Nm

I know it has a cambelt, which is the same thing. I meant that it isn't the bumpy one, so I guess I dont have to line up any teeth with the belt. It's a straight swap, making it a little easier I guess. So how do I remove the single cover of BOTH the tensioner and the water pump? I can't risk breaking anything. Rather check than regret it. As I have said in my other post, I struggle with my mental health so please be kind. I'm far from stupid and very, very good at fixing anything. Never worked on cars before and I'm 80% done with this, there is only a couple things I would like to confirm before I just blindly dive in at a risk. I have already found all the info you mentioned. I look forward to bragging. I will tag you. Thank you.

Please upload a photo of what you presume not to be ur timing belt. Since it’s not clear what you mean by bumpy one.

You’re are likely looking at the the alternator belt

1.9 TDI definitely has a standard cambelt/timing belt - I had a 2006 1.9 TDI A3 many years ago and a 2009 version after that and had to pay for it to be done :)

Thanks for all the criticism. I apologise for not knowing the exact names of certain parts. Through no help on here I now have a plan and know what I am doing.

Hope you get it Sorted Chris.
It is worth remembering that this forum does have a mechanical section, so maybe more mechanically minded people would see your post in there.
Also worth trying other forums as these engines are shared across Audi/VW/Skoda and Seat, so the answer may be out there if you check the popular forums on those platforms.
I know that's not a lot of help directly, but if i knew the answer myself I would assist.
Good luck!
