Having trouble closing the boot at times..just gonna replace the whole thing. Will it be the same locking mechanism as a tt as my local scrap yard has a few that I can pick apart.. thanks in advance

Nope ! tt's have different locking mechanism, the same applies to facelift and pre facelift, mechanism in the tailgates, facelift is soft touch style pre facelift is mechanical. easy to check if ur key has 2 buttons, pre facelift, 3 buttons with one for the boot facelift

Thanks for clearing that up mate.

Just remembered last time I went to my local scrap yard they had standard a3s of the same year I'm assuming they will be the same wont they?

A3's and S3's are the same as long as you swap a facelift part with a facelift part or a phase 1 part with a phase 1 Part

Sorted forgot I had a spare one from I changed over my boot lid a while back. This is what happens when you park up your car and buy a new one with problems

The thread above says pre-facelift should fit so in theory 1999 boot should fit 1997
Forgot about that detail when we were on the phone so I'm sure your issue is them wedge pieces

Strange that mine has none lol and its never been off that I am aware of anyway boot is wide open tonight :pirate: Just hope alarm does not go off

Lol that would be annoying
Dude I used my original wiring my handle/lock etc all fits o.k! but the actual striker plate and catch are different when I saw your plate the catch appears to be round where mine is more square, the boot does not appear to go down enough if that makes sense I will send some pics tomorrow from my camera as this current phone images are really poor quality maybe the spacers will bring it out to make it come down further if that does not work damn!!!! I really don't know I have considered all the other parts/possibilities i.e buffers stoppers etc.

Hey there!
I rly wanna know what have u done cause im in a similar situation . Got my new (used) tail gate today cause mine is dmged. My a3 8l is pre facelift and i found a s3 8l pre facelift rly cheap and in great condition. I noticed that my lock mechanic is different than the one on the new tail gate. I got this https://www.audi-sport.net/xf/attachments/a38l-jpg.205144/ and ofc the striker plate that works with this and the new gate got this https://www.audi-sport.net/xf/attachments/s-l1600-jpg.205146/. Can i just swap the new one with mine? Everything else is the same.

Thanks :D

No, unfortunately, it is not that easy to please see images locking unit bolts are in a different position I
Old one
New one
tried with my original one no good tried the new one wasn't having it made a small cut put on new larger one and had to mod the striker plate plus had to install hinge shims for line up adjustment also bolts on the s3 are larger and in a different position notice the heights of both but it can be done...

Hey there again and thnx for the reply! So basically what i had in mind was to do a straight swap and just modify my lock mechanism to fit but i guess that wont work. What if i get my self a striker plate to fit with the new mech?
Thnx again :D

Ok thanks. I guess im gonna get the striker plate that fits with the fat lock and do a straight swap.

So keep all the new parts and you just need to mod the striker plate so that it sits lower down to accommodate the new lock any problems let me know and I will be happy to assist @MPH

Ok thank you very much! Whats exactly the mod i need to do?

If using the original striker plate cut off the bottom to lower it and bring it closer to the car if using S3 plate cut of the sides with a grinder and make new holes to bolt it down.

My pleasure! you can use both striker plates but each one needs different adjustments good luck I would like to see what you have achieved when done its just a bit of trial and error keep me posted as mine is still in the experimental stage working but always looking to improve.
