Hello forum.

I have recently change my clutch and flywheel, to Sachs single mass flywheel and competition clutch.

After the operation, there is a lot of resonance(shaking) between 2000 and 2600 rpm.
There are almost nothing in gear 1 and 2 but starts in gear 3 and gets worse in 4th, 5th and 6th.
It is really bad if I accelerate in 6th gear or if I engine brake into the rpm range in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th.
The higher gear the more resonance.

I have even taken the gearbox off again to double check the flywheel. It was secure and got new bolts with tread lock, just in case.

I have since change the oil pump to a version without the balance shaft. That did nothing either good or bad to the resonance.

It is not the same every day - some days it is unbearable, and some days I almost doesn't notice.

There is nothing to hear from the gearbox (bearing) as far as I can hear while driving.

The exhaust pipe isn't touching the chassis, again, as far as I can see.

The front propshaft coupling is not round and will of cause be changed, but that wont cause the resonance in the rpm range, only in a specific velocity like a wheel, right?

The engine is upgraded with ECU, HPFP, Exhaust and is generating around 320bhp.

Do you have any suggestions the the cause of my headache?

Thank you in advance.

Welcome to the noises and concerns associated to the SMF! Everything you’re experiencing is expected and exactly what I’ve faced with my car.

Engine braking in 3,4,5 or 6th, the rattling/bearing noise is the gearbox overrun - it would have been present in the factory DMF but it would have been suppressed due to the nature of the DMF.

If you’re in 5th or 6th gear, low revs, don’t labour the car when accelerating - you’ll get the deep grinding noise - you’re going to have to use your gears a lot more.

Vibrations - you’re likely to get some during the running in period - how many miles do you have in the clutch. You will get some vibration but it shouldn’t be making the whole car shake when ran in and you’re up the rev range.

I had a Spec Stg2 clutch and SMF which I’ve just replaced for an RTS and SMF. I’m still in the bedding in phase but it’s a dream to drive again - back in love with the car.

The RTS SMF is about 2kg heavier and thicker, closer to the factory DMF.

Thank you for your reply.
Your reply takes a load off my back :D

I've driven about a 1000 miles with the "new" clutch and SMF.

Maybe I also should change to RTS aswell...

See how you go with this - if the vibrations on acceleration (in 1st, 2nd etc) don’t improve them speak to Sachs and see what they recommend.

As for the RTS - I’m only 300 mile into the run in process (the miles I do will take me a couple of months) and it’s a pleasure to drive however I haven't been able to drive it hard so that may be something else. I’m sure it will be fine.

Getting the right clutch is a bit of a mine field and it’s an expensive task to test each of them. Many say that the Helix is the one to go for - I have no experience of it so I don’t know. RTS are relatively new to the TFSI scene so building a presence and reputation. Some mixed reviews on the RTS but as they have modelled their SMF on the factory DMF, all chatter (nearly all) and vibrations have been removed. I’m happy so far and it’s far better than the Spec clutch I had in.

I have the RTS with a dmf. I have no vibration but I do have a bit of judder inspite of nearly 500 miles of in traffic driving.
I too have heard mixed reviews about RTS with some people having issues if they are not happy.
It is essential that it is fitted by someone like Awesome so that there can be no warranty avoidance due to the quality of fitting being questioned.
I would have gone for the Helix with dmf but I have a dodgy left knee and so may have struggled with the extra spring pressure.

If I ever get to change the clutch/flywheel again, I will consider the RTS.
