Hi - looking to remove the headlights to change a couple of bulbs, I've had a go but it's pretty difficult.
Is they're some trick to getting them out - or does the bumper need to come off

bumper off to remove headlights, shouldnt be required though.
what engine do you have?

Depends, if they are xenon then its a real pain to change the main beam etc in situ unless you have very small hands and can bend them backwards, that said it is doable, if they are normal bulbs it is much easier in situ , side lights are easy to do insitu.

It's the s4 4.2 xenon
Iis properly hard to replace the bulbs whilst the headlights are in situ.
If I could remove the headlights itd be simple but I fear it's a bumper off job which makes me cry...

They can be changed insitu, I have done it myself twice with my xenons and I have large hands aswell.
The drivers side isn't to bad to be honest it's the passenger side that's a real knuckle scraper, but still doable , you just need to loosen a few bits to get better access to the aperture to get at the bulb and holder.
Really no need to remove the bumper if you tackle it the right way.

Can second what's being said above, headlight bulbs can be replaced with units in situ.

If you do want to take the units out, eg to replace the bulb holders or wiring, the front bumper just needs to be undone and then dropped down out the way, not completely removed, if that makes sense.

I have had to remove my headlights a number of times to change bulbs and due to the adjustable fixings that un adjust when you remove the headlight I have to take the bus down the local MOT centre each time and bung the chap £10 to adjust the beams back to where they need to be. So annoying

I've changed the bulbs with the headlights in situ- absolute ballache.

Had go remove a few things to get the rear covers off.

I would have rather removed them as I wanted to reseal them as they both appear to leak.

What's the process of dropping the bumper slightly to aid removing the headlights?

A lot of B7 jobs are of a somewhat " Awkward" nature to say the least, just think of it as a challenge.
