Hi, might be a silly question. Does the 4 wheel drive system on the b8 s4 need to be serviced. Someone said to me that the golf r has to be done and that mine would probably need to be done.
The B8 S4 has a permant 4WD system known as "Torsen" (short for torque-sensing) to distinguish it from the non-permanent "Haldex" system in the A/S3 models (which share a platform with the Golf). Haldex systems need servicing at specified intervals, Torsen systems don't. That said, if the rear diff is a quattro sport diff, it's good practice to change the diff oil at periodic intervals. Mine's about to get done at 4 years and 35,000 miles.
Yep change oils on center and rear diffs. I believe on S4 they say lifetime oils but no oil is lifetime. If it's not been changed an is older than 5 years then I would change it.
Officially (i.e. according to those folks at Audi in whom we have so much faith) the only routine service requirement for the B8 S4 transmission is the ATF and filter for the s-tronic gearbox. But for the B8 RS4 the gear oil in the gearbox and both oils in the sports diff require periodic renewal. Since there is little difference between the transmissions on the two cars, the requirement comes down to the expected difference in usage.
The RS4/5 uses the same sports diff as the S4/5 and does have a service schedule that I think is 20k miles. If upping the power on an S4/5 to almost RS level it would make sense to follow the RS schedule.... And would be recommended to do a service on it even if you were not upping the power on your S4/5
