Hi all
I Am using bp ultimate for my s3 2018 saloon
I have been told that the likes of the supermarket super unleaded is better and cheaper than the likes of bp esso shell premium unleaded.
Cheers for any replies

Opening a can of worms here, many different views on the quality of supermarket fuel compared to branded.

One thing for sure though, supermarket fuel is cheaper

Tried all sorts, now I just stick with Tesco 99 as it's cheapest and closest to me.

Supermarket fuel cannot be better, but it is cheaper.
The person that told you supermarket fuel is cheaper than premium brands is truly enlightened. :D

I stopped using Asda fuel and starting going on a stupid detour to pay more for Tesco 99...

I don't know why, I notice no difference :p

(Only started because I bought the MTM Cantronic, otherwise I would still be using Asdas cheap stuff!

Tesco momentum. No way on the streets you would ever under legal speeds tell the difference. I wait (with evidence) to be corrected.

Following this thread I thought I would tuck in to some Tesco 99 tonight. Not that I’ll tell the difference in performance like but it was 12p a litre cheaper than the v-power that I normally use and I get me clubcard points. Think given the positive feedback it gets and the fact I’m sure it’s a good fuel, I’ll probably stick with it now. 12p is a lot of difference per litre, huge actually.

Stick in what you can afford, l fire in unleaded now, stopped using super since these exorbitant prices started don't feel any difference and it still goes like a rocket when l chose it to

+1

Biggest difference I have noticed between fuel is the amount of sooting on the exhaust tips. Not tried Tesco as there is not one near me. For me V power is worth the extra to save the extra cleaning!

95ron? Why would you do that?

That's what I use as well, but I clean my exhaust tips every day so they never get a chance to get dirty. :D
I done the same with previous cars and there was always some soot on the cloth, but there has been virtually none at all with this car.
It's unusual, but I'm not complaining. :)

Tut tut tut I’m shocked in you ;)

Tesco 99 always, only time I top up with v power is when leaving santa pod, to get me home.

As said in an above post, recommended by mrc over shell.

Because these cars are performance cars and 98ron is performance fuel....
Well l don't drive fast... I used super unleaded when it was £1-16 a litre l ain't using it now at £1-40 when it makes no difference, l used it in my PFL s3 and it didn't make any difference either ergo lesson learnt... You fire in nitrous oxide if you wish I'll stick with 95 ron... It's called preference

It’s not all about performance, the higher octain will burn cleaner and in turn is better for you engine. The S3 is an odd choice for somebody that drives slowly and worries about the cost of fuel. But as you say, it’s called preference...

If it's only price that's important to anyone, Costco is the place to go (if you're a card holder).
Cheaper than even the supermarkets.
Like @jassyo06 I've reverted to "standard" unleaded. I do drive fast, when conditions permit, but also don't see enough of a benefit to pay the higher price any longer. I'll be rid of the car by the time it's 3 years old, after that someone else can worry about it.

I tend to go for a mixture, I won’t drive out of my way to find the perfect pump but will put good stuff in if available. Sainsbury’s 97 seems to be a good compromise when doing the food shop.

I don't worry about the cost of the fuel mate or the £450 road tax, l spend more dosh on my car than most on here ie detailing etc etc... I rent the car.... I ain't into speed like yourself, plus there's the political stance, of why do we pay so much ****** tax on fuel when we pump the ****** stuff out of the North Sea .... I don't drive slowly either l drive as fast as the traffic in front allows

Each to there own, I just feel that by not giving it the best fuel you can your not getting the most out of it, maybe it’s down to the fact my cars are always tuned/mapped and they’re mapped to run on the higher octain. As for the price or as you say the **** tax, I totally agree but that’s just how it is here to unfortunately...

Said this thread would open a can of worms :)

For the record use Tesco Momentum by default as it’s 1.5 miles up the road but will put anything in if I have to and on the odd occasion even put in Tesco 95 RON if I know that I am doing a long return journey up and down the M1 to pick my lad up from uni in Birmingham

I’ve started using Tesco 99 and although I haven’t noticed any difference in power, I’m pretty confident that I get a few more miles per tank (20-30 perhaps). No scientific or factual evidence to back this up however, I just figured the extra cost pays for itself (in my mind anyway!!)

Tesco Momentum with an occasional tank of V Power for me as it’s meant to be decent for the engine, don’t notice any difference between either though

I think it comes down to how long you may own the car. I use to work in supplying packaging/processing equipment to the food processing industry and many of those plants co-packed generic products for the major supermarkets and believe me their generic branded products did not have the same quality of ingredients, as the processors major brands and resulted in a cheaper product to produce/sell. I would assume it is the same for blended petrol products as well, as the supermarkets do not own refineries. The fuel additives that are in the Shell, BP etc. may be more plentiful, cost more and result in less build up of gunk etc. in the engine and prolong engine life and maintenance due to the build up of carbon etc.
Just a thought, as I have often heard mechanics ask what brand of fuel a customer is using when they have had issues with ping/engine knock and other combustion/corrosion issues. Again may not be an issue for you if you turn your car in every 2-4 years.

In our area, most fuel other than Jet (Phillips66) and Shell V power is all produced at the same local oil refinary, all from the same tanks loaded in the same loading bays. The only difference is the jollop added, each company have their own blend of additives added by computer control when loading the refinary's own brand fuel (Total) into the tankers.
How do I know? My father delivered it for many years to Texaco and later on to Tesco.
