I am looking at a new trim S4 B9 engine and the base model seems to have enough equipment to satisfy my tastes. however i wonder what i would be missing out if i did not find one with adaptive suspension

I've driven both and it depends on what you want. I have kids and a wife who don't like the car super still all the time so it means that I can stick it in comfort/efficiency/auto when they're in it and slacken things off a bit. When alone I can run it in dynamic or individual with the stiffer setup for chucking it round corners a bit better.

It's noticeable but I wouldn't say that it's night and day. Unless you're specifically looking for it I wouldn't say that you're missing out because the standard setup isn't too crashy but is still fun to chuck around.

cheers for that. I am coming from an M135 but want something a bit comfier but which still has a bit of speed to it. my M135 did not have the adaptive suspension and i sort of regretted not having it

I don't think that it's as stiff as that. The best idea would to go for a test drive if you have a dealership near you that can give you an S4 for a bit? If it doesn't have the adaptive suspension, just bear in mind that the adaptive is only a little softer and a little stiffer in the respective settings rather than being a massive change when you go through the modes. So if it's significantly stiffer/softer than you'd like then the adaptive probably isn't going to fix that for you.

I've just come out of a M135i with Adaptive Suspension, I drove that in comfort 95% of the time. The S4 with non-adaptive dampers is a harder ride, quite noticeably so.

There are very few used cars with adaptive suspension and they tend to go quickly. I'm happy with mine without, a bit firm at low speeds, probably due to 19 inch wheels which have been standard since 2017 model, but wife hasn't complained the couple of times I've taken her out in it. Not sure if its my imagination, but mine which is only 6 weeks old seems quicker than the 2017 model cars I tried a few months ago.

I dont have it and never felt the ride was harsh. Came from a Golf R on 18's also without adaptive.

Mine doesn’t have adaptive, I find it firm but not crashy. It’s actually a pretty good balance. It’s softer yet handles better than my C250d Merc.

I’d say adaptive would be the icing on the cake but not on a must have list.
