I listen to music more than I watch TV so I always like to buy sound systems that suit my budget and taste.

The thing is since kitting my house out with Sonos, I have moved away from hard media, relying on digital whether it’s on a memory stick for the cars or streamed. I have a pair of Bose QC20’s for my iPhone where all my music on it is streamed.

All my units provide a nice sound and I’ve got to a point where I have the quality just about right, although on occasions some streamed music can sound a bit naff.

Anyhow, I’m in a restaurant in Verona last week waiting to use the toilet and while I am there music is playing, not loud, just restaurant level. Well the sound took my little head back to the good old days of paper cone speakers. The bass was a lovely deep yet subtle sound, full of body, if you know what I mean. It just sucked me into the music although I wasn’t that interested in what was being played.

When I looked around I saw the old school wooden surround speaker, probably twice the size of a conventional house speaker fixed to the wall. The problem is, it’s now got me pining for a proper system again!!!

So what are you guys sporting as your main sound system?

3 x Sonos Play 1’s. Living room, bedroom and kitchen. A trusty SL-1210 connected through a Sonos Connect for the vinyl. All my digital music is stored on WD MyBookLive NAS drive and I control it all through an old iPad 4th gen. I used to have Technics separates with massive speakers but I let it all go years ago, big regret.

I must admit the Sonos system is nice. I’d like to buy the Play 5 but I can’t justify the cost for the size of our rooms. The Play 3’s work well in our kitchen and dining room. In fact the dining room speaker has got a bracket so I can attach it to the wall in the garden.

I want to get a bass to go with the Playbar in the living room to see if that helps achieve the sound I want.

Years ago I had my Cambridge Audio bass amp repaired but when I connected it back up to the system the speakers were only feeding from my treble amp. Since then everything has been left in the attic.

My wife prefers the Sonos because she got fed up with all the heavy cables linking everything up, but Verona has got me thinking.

I have a house full of Sonos, it’s very good but no substitute for a proper Hi Fi set up.
Now consigned to the spare room... Audiolab pre & power amps, pair of 1200’s (and 1000’s of records) also, some very large monitor audio speakers. All feeding back to a Sonos Connect so I can listen to my old tape/ record collection throughout the house.
I have also found that the quality of streamed music varies widely, Tidal is by far the best (that Sonos can handle) but only really noticeable on the Hi Fi set up... doesn’t make a difference on the play module speakers.
The Sonos sub is good, especially for the home cinema side of things, but for the same money you could buy a basic intergrated amp & speakers that would sound 100 times better for music.

I went for Sonos amplifiers and connected to klipsch ceiling speakers in 4 rooms, and in the living room a Sonos connect into my Yamaha soundbar and wharfedale 250W sub. Listening to it right now - sounds ace!

I'm a home cinema nut but also love music. My kit consists of:
Amplifier = Yamaha RX A1070
floorstanders = Kef Q900
Centre = Kef Q600c
Rear = Monitor Audio BX2
Subwoofer = REL T9.

Music is played digitally for me these days either from my PC which is connected to that amplifier or through Spotify which is integrated into the amp.

There's system is a real bone shaker, movies sound epic and produce a real impact. Music also sounds great. It's not a top tier system but overall it does sound ****** good but being a techie nerd I'll always find ways to improve it........ Funds allowing lol !!

Yeah, streaming does vary. I wonder whether I’ll need to buy more Play 1’s if I go for the sub, but a proper sound system....hmmmm.

My father has a full set up with Kef speakers and it does sound nice. I was thinking about a Kef Muo for travelling.

Ive not heard the Muo to be honest but anything from Kef is usually exceptional. Im actually hoping to upgrade my floorstanders to the R900's.

KEF, Monitor Audio and Dali all make exceptional equipment, all have some great solutions for portable Bluetooth style speakers. The Dali Katch is well worth a listen
