Got a set of nearly new 16" Audi wheels and Continental WinterContact TS860 tyres fitted today.

Much better on the damp greasy roads and very quiet. Gives me a chance to clean the 18" wheels before storing them until after the winter. Probably need new summer tyres soon. Not much left on them. Will probably get a set of Uniroyal Rainsport 3's in the spring.

Anyone know what wheels these 16" ones are?

Identical setup to mine, identical tyres even! They are superb, as I wrote in another thread, I saw 2 cars go off the road on a mountain pass a few days ago but these Contis felt like claws.

No clue about the wheels, I am running standard 16" A3 FL 5 spoke wheels.

Can I ask are you guys fitting 16” alloys and tyres on to the car for money saving or is that what you need to fit? Thinking of winter tyres myself and was trying to see how much it would be.

I'm fitting mine this weekend. I go from 18" wheels to 16" as tyres are cheaper and if the alloys get scuffed it's not a problem.

Do you inform your insurance company that you have fitted different wheels and tyres?

Generally 16" tyres (and narrower tyres in general) should perform better during the winter (there are a few cases where wider tyres perform better though, we had a nice discussion in another thread about it). 16" alloys are much cheaper if they get damaged and 16" tyres as well so money plays a role as well.

Yes I told my insurance company (LV) and they have noted it on their system. You should inform them of any mod like this.

Thought so. Just had a £25 a year increase as I didn't tell them I had parking sensors fitted as an extra when I got the car

Hmm. This time round when I went to renew with LV they specifically asked if I had parking sensors and AEB (automatic emergency braking), presumably as these items decrease the chance of claims! I was able to answer Yes to both and my premium dropped! Strange. Were your parking sensors fitted as an after-market accessory or fitted as an option when you purchased? If the latter then there should be no increase.

They were fitted by Audi as part of the deal. Had to make a claim for a rear bumper. Parking sensors came up and I was told “as you haven’t declared the cars been modified there will be an increase”

I had similar rubbish a few years ago on a previous car, IIRC the insurance company was part of the Admiral Group. Had bought the car second hand and hence only realised it had hill hold assist later on. When I told them they tried to increase my premium on the grounds it was a modification. I made a very big fuss indeed that I was being asked to pay extra for a safety feature and they eventually backed down.

I was the same. They wanted another £400+ for me to put winter wheels and tyres on. I gave them it tight and they eventually checked with the underwriters. They said there was no problem at all. No extra premium and no charge for changing it on the system when I changed them.

It's odd how insurance works differently in different countries.

Here, the insurance companies only take engine displacement, engine power and engine eco standard into equation for standard insurance.

If you want full coverage insurance - kasko policy, (car got stolen, caught fire, etc.) they do calculations based on number you tell them - you can say any number you want as long as it is the same value or cheaper than when your car was new.

Don't know how kasko policy is called in the UK, but here's a Wikipedia explanation of it:

Also the third parties, fire and theft are common insurance policies, while the all inclusive policies (kasko policy) which include also damages of the vehicle causing the accident or the injuries.
