I think the 310PS or whatever, is somewhat, conservative... Anyone dyno'ed a standard S3?
I had mine dynod with just an intake fitted and it made 325bhp, I've been saying the whole time they are rapid!!

Straight line figures would be interesting for many of these cars, and I agree a group Dyno day with various machines would be very interesting. Perhaps followed by a blast down Bedford Autodrome lol.

However, I'd argue that an M3/M4 would see which way a S3 or A45 went when it comes to the twisties... they really do struggle to get the power down cleanly in my opinion. I was behind a briskly driven Alfa Romeo Quadrifoglio the other night and out of roundabouts and tighter turns, you could see it wiggle with the TCS fighting to keep it on the black stuff. I had to keep backing off to not run into the back of him... of course, the driver could have had lead weights on his feet and just been mashing the peddle.
I had an m4 for a month and it was the most frustrating car I'd ever driven, tc light was pretty much permantly on, even came on changing gears.

All I will add @jassyo06 to what you said is firstly I agree with you regarding mid-range punch on standard car....and having gone through Stage 1 and into Stage 2 I can tell you (although am sure you already know....) Stage 1 wakes up the horsepower, but Stage 2 opens up the mid-range a lot...
Regarding "having a play with other motorists" whilst its not big and/or clever I'd say the S3 surprises a LOT of other cars....late home from work one night I hit the dual carriageway off a roundabout alongside a couple of heavily modified street racers (370Z and Civic)...even had numbers on the cars....it wasn't a race per se as only short distance, I honestly expected to see both of them boost past me immediately but I was pulling away until I backed off at speed limit.....I was Stage 1 at time....very hard to beat the S3 in these circumstances over short distance. Now at Stage 2 I'm too scared in all honesty to play with people as I think the car is too limited to handle the power safely...and obviously its NOT safe kids!

Think they can handle 500+ bhp perfectly fine ?

Yes am quite sure based on what a lot of people are already doing with hybrid and Stage 3+ turbo set ups....but you need a lot of supporting mods to do it right and for the car to be driveable and useable at the top end....and I'm really not wanting to go much further than where I am for a daily driver on crappy roads. But for those looking to unlock the cars potential, improve response and mid-range....Stage 2 is epic [but don't do it if you're worried about warranty/things wearing out more quickly obviously]

I was stage 2+ with a stock edition 30 that can't stop or do bends like an s3 can but can still out perform other cars
Out of the box the golf r/s3 is a great drivers car imho

I've had mine just over 13 months now and totally fell out of love with it on 12 months. kinda got to a point where I felt I would be better of with a well specd 1.4, lower monthlies and enough squirt to keep me amused. However, I'm very much over that silly idea and back to loving it again. I've found much like many of you It's very possible to enjoy applying the loud pedal without driving like a complete tool and giving any reason to have your licence shredded. I was, prior to my new more adult attitude guilty of driving like a bit of a nob and blamed the car for bringing the worst out in me. I'm glad I'm past it and simply enjoying the ownership experience again. Best car I've owned.

Can't be any worse than what's been posted over on VWROC, "cars you've embarrassed in your R". Bit of a marmite thread, but best thing on that forum now, rest is utter sh*te

I've seen this thread aswell, I agree it's quite good. If you can bypass the fact that what we're talking about is 'not driving to the law' then it can be a good topic to get into. Always interested to hear experiences and what people think of the cars. It's all relative and until you get to track you'll never know... but 90% of people have to get their kicks on the road.

Hmm, not sure I would say the S3's mid-range performance is 'poor'... The performance is comparable with similar hatches in the same segment, A45 included. TTRS on the other hand, performance of that thing is just blistering, probably comparable with an R8 up to certain speeds, something like that comes up your rear, just move over and let him past lol

Check out Archie Hamilton on YouTube with a 450bhp A45, have a look at what the new TTRS does to him, not a pretty sight haha

'450bhp' A45 :whistle2: . Funny how how his '450bhp' A45 got smoked by a stock M4 once the M4 found grip :tearsofjoy: M4 425bhp circa 1450kg, A45 450bhp circa 1450kg. Would love to see the ttrs against an M4 tho.

Yes, mine ran 336hp. Might be slightly over (that was at 1500 miles too), but it won't be 25hp out.

I used that dyno with an Ecboost Fiesta, expected 123 and returned 126 with a K&N panel filter. That day people had 400hp tuned Focus RS', pulling 330... the look on their faces was hilarious!! Mostly pumaspeed tuned RS', great fun watching their disappointment. The dyno apparently has a reputation for reading under the mark, but I doubt that now.

I ran my 120hp A3 on it, it came up 131hp standard.

The TTRS will anyilate a M4 off the mark and will continue to keep it like that,l would actually say the TTRS is the fastest car Audi make bar of course the V10 plus

Jesus, there's some people on this forum that think they're worlds above everyone else :tearsofjoy:

My mate has a A45 AMG and we went a run out the other night, came up against a V8 Rangey SVR and of course we had a play ourselves. They're not as far apart as the papers would have you think.

Nice looking cars , nice to see someone who has had similar experiences between these cars, like you say, the difference really is nowhere near as substantial as the paper stats might suggest

Think the problem with the S3 is, and may cause some owners to believe it is not as quick is it actually is, is the fact that the car is so well built the way it delivers its power can be extremely deceptive. My brother previously had an E60 M5 (507 bhp V10) and when that thing was in the most aggressive gear settings the shifts and way it accelerated through gears was nothing short of violent, the S3 is in many ways just as quick as that car up to 80/90, but wouldn't feel it because of the way it delivers its performance.

Im hoping to get my stock S3 dyno'd at some point as well as I do not believe for a second its 'only' making 310ps.

Just read this thread from start to finish and I must admit the first few posts had me laughing my head off. Happy days. On topic though... I had an s3 which by the time I sold it was revo stage 2. I can't think of a day I drove my car where I didn't enjoy it or felt underwhelmed at all, be it as stock or modified, the only reason I modified it was simply to see how much more I could get, but even as a stock car ( pre f-l ) i thought you definitely got enough bang for your buck. Oh and I also drove it kinda spirited on just a couple of occasions, but once got done by a 10 year old Mazda!...... I'm off to hang my head in shame

This, I've had mine mapped now and she has 400bhp, sometimes I feel like it's not as quick as I feel 400bhp should be. But it's so smooth and a quick look at the speedo and you realise that your perception of the speed is very deceptive!

was a Mazda 3, a red one, ( red ones are fast ) to look at it briefly you wouldn't know what it had done as there were no visible signs of modification, but it must of had something special under the bonnet like a big turbo kit or something as it literally disappeared on me...... :racer: anyway I don't like talking about it anymore as it's still raw :sob:

I had that with a MK1 Golf when I had the R32, accelerated down a slip road to show off the noise etc (he was with a MK4 Golf and could tell they were in to their VW's) looked in my rear view mirror and couldn't see him, he was next to me, then in front of me :tearsofjoy: must have had a 1.8T in it or something.

See, I had it the other way around in my ST. I used to sneak up on the Focus RS's, really upset them lol. Used to easily keep up with E46 M3's, STi Scoobies etc - still swear the S3 isn't as quick despite the supposed increase in power. My old ST was supposed to put out about 260-270bhp... it was probably more like 340-350bhp.

Having said that, I did get completely left for dead once by a Mugen Civic Type R... it just deployed its power out of the corners so much better than the ST. After that, I went and spent a few grand on a LSD... lol

Haven't had any real battle with the S3 yet...

I can't work out if the S3 is quicker than my old Focus RS or not (mk1 btw no boat like mk2) The RS was around 350-375bhp and was just aggressive all the time, in the way it handled to the way it put the power down (mainly due to how it was modified and set up). The S3 doesn't feel as quick, but when you look at the speedo you realise it probably is, however it is doing it with a lot less fuss and in a much more refined manor.

The problem for me is that you lose some of the feel of the car; with nothing but an LSD in the RS I could feel everything and the car reacted to my input rather than changed my input to what best suits the car - ie traction control, esp etc Not to mention the fantastic chassis on the mk1 focus teamed with upgraded suspension, bushes etc etc.

That said I wouldn't go back to the RS over the S3 because the S3 offers so much more in terms of luxury and comfort, which is more important to me at this time. However you put your foot down and you reach speed limits very quickly; as has been mentioned I think the S3 is deceptively quick, but cant help but feel it needs a remap and a bit of tinkering to say 400bhp or so to make it a bit more of an edge of the seat drive, but then I guess you're basically looking at an RS3!
