I've been noticing of late a lot of chaps having issues with there B7 2.0tfsi's , had a good old snoop through the interwebby and came across this thread from another like minded forum.
The question is targeting the "BUL " engine specifically and any issues that may be known to effect it, looks like its not too bad really , probably the more reliable of the 2.0tfsi based engine used in our B7's ,that works for me to be honest....anyway here you go , it may help put some owners mind at ease a bit more, i'm a BUL owner and I don't expect mine to be perfect but seems to be behaving itself.

later engines seem to be the best of the bunch too , the ones with the black rocker cover , and that's not the plastic cover either.
early BUL engines had a silver rocker cover and black plastic cover, later revised BUL engine had a black rocker cover and black plastic top cover, also revised cam follow in the later engines along with a few other bits too, but eitherway both a good lump, well if looked after during the cars lifetime that is, neglect it and you will have problems in the same way as with the other 2.0tfsi's in B7's...

Thanks for posting this up, I will be looking to get a B7 soonish so its good to know what I should look out for, basically go for the later B7 with no hint of silver on the top of the engine!

mines was originally built in nov 2007 so i presume that makes it a later one. its done 165k so seems like its reliable only problems ive had is pcv/dv and a persistent vacuum leak i cant find

Thats good to know thanks for the info mine has a black rocker cover :)

Its a 56 plate and only has the turbo actuator noise - the engine itself seems fine aside the PCV which i replaced on monday :)

BUL have 220bhp as standard where as others have 200. i think they only came with DTM and S Line Special Editions but not 100% sure

I did put up a thread a while back on the subject of the BUL engines and their differences, i'll revive it for you....as they are a different power unit to the other code engines, may look the same but they are not.

Hi where do i find the thread for the differences between engines? Also i have a BUL engine with GMV box fitted will a GVE box fit? I know the ratios are different but it would be fitted just so i can use the car whilst rebuilding the original box

The early BUL engines had the silver cam over, then revised ones had the black cover and other updated parts.
Some engine parts are BUL specific and depending on VIN number etc but other parts are shared with the 2.0 TFSI engines in the B7 , best to check carefully before buying parts .

Can the GVE and GMV gearbox be used on both - interchangeable?

Not really just wondered how interchangeable components were. I have two b7 Avant quattros one with a silver top knackered engine and the other black top that's the daily
Me too. I was tempted to swap them over and replace the cam cover gasket at the same time.
