Hi :)

Hope someone can explain this one for me please ??

I'm currently looking for a 2013 Avant TDI Quattro or Allroad, and I want one with the round knob type MMI controller just under the gear lever. Although I've tried Googling, I can't find out why some have the wheel, and some just have what looks like four press buttons even though they are the same age ??

What's the difference between the two, and do both types do exactly the same thing ?? Seems strange having two different types, I would have thought they'd all the same ??

Cheers,
Graeme.

Are you sure they all have MMI?

If it has MMI then there will be a wheel, I think this may have moved up to the centre console at some point but others will confirm.

The wheel will have a joystick in the middle if its 3G MMI and if not then it's 2G MMI. If there is no wheel behind the gear stick or on the centre console then they don't have MMI and just the basic system.

Incorrect I have a knob behind gear stick and don't have joystick in centre of it
I have MMI 3G

Only the HDD 3G+ has joystick in fact there's two with HDD and with HDD and SIM card
These two have joystick

The simcard slot is between the 2 SD memory card slots under the cd slot (press the button that says open), i have HDD 3G+ but no sim card slot

Me too. The joystick is only used for nav I think...... that's when I use it anyway!

Yea i've tried it out on a few different screens but only found any use for it on nav (and even then i rarely use it)

Not quite true either. There was two MMI 3G systems (not 3G+) - one is called Low which is DVD based Nav with a lower resolution screen and no joystick, the other is high with HDD based Nav, high res screen with joystick,Jukebox and DVD Video playing capability. 3G+ is based on the latter but with new interface and things like Google Maps and Audi Connect.

So I was correct you div both if you have a HDD you have the joystick there's two versions of this with and without sim just as my last post and 3G without the joystick

JUST AS MY LAST POST

I have the high res screen, DVDs and no joystick so bang your wrong too I was only making it easy for the op but if you want to get pedantic

Thanks for the insults :)

Only pointing out there is a 3G none plus that has a joystick as well. If I misread your post then I apologise.

I've got the joystick. Only other thing I've found it useful for is adjusting the sound focus on the stereo. Can't remember finding any other uses though!

I have the full potatoes, 3G+ with Audi connect, all the features with joystick and HDD plus a SIM card slot which I have a data SIM in and I get live google maps with streetview of destination etc. is very very good.

You can also browse your destination via street-view and the joystick like you would on a PC, its very good.

I pointed this out in my first post then you went to correct me (wrongly)

Sorry and I want the bag of potatos too just don't want to split with another £900
I am thinking + without sim as there only £250

Just need to make sure I can get 7 digit post code first without paying more £££

With 3G+ with Audi connect I just login to google maps, find the destination and send it to the car, it takes you to the front door, no need to sit in the car putting the address in etc.
Google maps send to car

I'm not sure if inputting the destination on the PC version of Google Maps works on retrofitted units - I know certain functionality can only be done when the cars VIN is in the Audi database.

My 3G is 5 digit but there's a hack or something for the + to make 7 digit
I may be wrong here but am led to believe so

What software version you running on your main unit as I thought that all 3G were 7 digit. Wondering if it is an earlier one that didn't have it.

3G basic
Keep debating on getting the high or plus the plus connect is useless unless it was factory as you put in above post if you get high there's parts that don't work with the 7 digit so only real option is plus put parts are so£££ it's a put off

Someone please help with part numbers please
I have

7" screen 8R0919604

MMI 3G high controls 8T0919609 (8 buttons)
MMI 3G plus controls 8T0919611L (4 buttons)

MMI 3G high 8R2035666
MMI 3G plus 8R1035670

But wtf is 8f1035746 it seems a 3G plus too ??

Anyone shed light on this

746 is the USA equivalent of the European 670 - with Data SIM (Bluetooth High). Surprised it starts with 8F as Plus units I thought only started with 8R.

8R2035666 is definitely MMI 3G Plus but with only Bluetooth Low and no Audi connect however using a selection of TP-Link kit, you can still get Audi Connect. Change the end to 670 and you add SIM and Audi Connect.

8T2035666 is MMI 3G High with Bluetooth Low and 8T2035670 is the same but BT High.

If the code is 8T1 or 8R1 this is the LHD version, 8T2 or 8R2 are for RHD.

YOu need a myAudi account to link it to, I am assuming that Audi enable the car through their infrastructure too at build time if it has Audi connect fitted/enabled.

Its a shame as its a super b feature, had it on the wife's X5 for the past 5 years, and had to add it to the order list for the RS, will be on the next car too.

I think Audi have dropped the BT high and low options in the 3G+ units, I have the retrofitted the 8R2035666 unit and in my opinion it has BT high since it streams and does calls too with all my phonebook and call list imported into the unit and SDS works like a charm.

The only difference that I can think of is rSAP in the 670 unit which would only work if you have the sim slot as it has an additional module inside it that connects to the phone aerial.

Any other differences between BT high and low in 3G+ that I am not aware off?

Bluetooth High is still available in the latest brochures but like you say I think it's aimed more at rSAP. I did think it was needed to get Audi Connect as standard without adding via green menus and networking kit. BT Audio streaming was a feature of MMI 3GP rather than BT High as far as I know.

I just found a 8R2035670 but if I want Bluetooth high too what do I need

I want the best or nothing to be honest

The 670 unit is the best!

You cant go any higher spec than the 670 which has the sim slot for you to get google earth and audi connect services and has rSAP so you can use your phones data instead of putting a different sim into the slot.

You will have to wire it up with an additional fakra to the phone antenna in the shark fin.

Just out of interest where did you find one?, I am potentially looking for one too although I'm more than content with my 666 unit.

I saw 4 on Monday with one at current bids of 159 altho it had a few days to go so will be more. What did you search on?

really!, looking on ebay.co.uk with 8R2035670 as search, I am probably just being really thick!

Ignore me I'm looking at 666 units (muppet of the year and all that)

Considering the price difference I'd get 666 and add networking kit to upgrade it to a 670 at that price!

LOL - and here I was scratching my head thinking what am I searching for!

Yes there's a few 666 units on fleabay, some are also on there without part numbers so if you search with the right words, you might be able to grab yourself a good bargain considering they haven't bothered to put up the part number.

Search 2035670 or 1035670 :)
I got one for £200 I feel so happy

Thank you

Will I need new antenna or will the factory one I have have the GSM inside

Is the 666 a plus unit or high ? I got a 666 for £200 too but thinking of returning it because I was led to believe it was high not plus

Also it wasn't the best of the best

As long as the start of the code is 8R2 it's 3G Plus. 666 just determines Nav High with BT Low.

There were different versions of the shark fin depending on equipment - if you have the armrest cradle then you should have a GSM antenna already.

Not sure if that would give you the right results as you have to get the one starting in 8R2, the 8T2 was 3G high not 3G+ and you could end up with the 4L or 4G which are from the Q7 and wont fit.

The 8R1 or 8T1 would be for the LHD market so wouldn't fit either unless you replace the fascia.

Hope you got the right one

Ok some update
I got my unit from a q7
And it works well I plug it in I hear music lol

Can I apologise and say I have the small screen I have ordered the big one

Here is my unit
