Hi guys I have a 07 3.0tdi a5 with the mmi 2g sat nav system, would like to update it if possible, I've seen some places Google maps installed but think it's only possible on the 3G units, could anyone give me an pointers on how to do the upgrade? I've seen the discs on eBay but for £20 looks too good to be true, also does any of the layout change? Or is it all the same, thanks Jack.

Yea, afraid you're going to need to add another couple of zeros to that £20 estimate...!

Need all new units, wiring and coding. Even more if you want Audi Connect, which is now complicated by the fact that you need to register the VIN number, which assumes its from a A5 with it as a factory option.

Better off going with an aftermarket solution, such as the Alpine system. Same sort of money (around £2k), but get the reversing camera and other mods cons as well.

Hi sorry I should of maybe worded it better, I already have sat nav, Bluetooth , interface etc, I mean just updating the map package

Oh I see. Sorry mis-read and thought you were interested in upgrading your 2G system to a 3G system.

There is a thread on A5OC about updating the maps, but as far as I can tell its limited to the 3G units:

Not sure if there is an equivalent for the 2G.

Would be cautious of files from unknown sources. Pretty sure I've read of instances where peoples MMI has been bricked due to dodgy versions....

just done my upgrade myself got it done few hours to do but straight forward if it goes in audi they would think they did it

Where did you get to in the end? I’ve got a 2008 S5 with mmi2g and everywhere I’ve talked to has just said my only option is the alpine unit which costs £2k... not exactly an option when the car only cost 7k!

I wouldn't spend any money at all updating the OEM system; in particular, any map update is out of date the day after it's installed. Apple CarPay/Android Auto interface retrofit is the way to go.

Tell me more...can you recommend any UK places that can help me out? I’ve watched a couple of YouTube videos and frankly it’s beyond me!

Have a read of this thread from the B8 A4 section. You''ll see that there's essentially two approaches; one is expensive and relative low risk, the other much cheaper but brings some risks and uncertainties with it. I went the high cost/low risk route. Either way, it is a pretty good way of attaching some modernity to what is now a pretty antiquated system.

Yeah I found the product on the Unique Audio Developments website for £450 exc installation. It almost looks too good to be true - it doesn’t feel like my screen would be capable of producing that level of quality picture but maybe I’m wrong.
I see that UAD don’t do installation but they have some installer network so will be interesting to see how much that is... will let you know how I get on

I used my own local installer to do it as I wasn't confident of doing it myself. It was a cracking job, and a year on I've never regretted it.

if you’re in any doubt about which one to choose, contact their customer support. They’re very good at making sure you get the right version for your car.

I’ve run into difficulties! The guy can’t find the screen control module (?). He thought it might be behind the screen itself but apparently it might be under the passenger seat carpet and that might be a big job to get to it. Any thoughts?

Sorry; never heard of a screen control module.

Ok so it’s called the “MMI display module”. It’s not behind the screen, in the glove compartment or in the boot...
