My 2.8 has developed a horrible squeaking / squealing noise on both left and right turn of the steering wheel.
At first I thought it was from inside the car (around steering column) but now I am almost certain its external. Even when I go over a bump it makes the noise also which makes me think steering rack possibly???? I hope not.

Any thoughts / advice would be much appreciated.

P.S- My steering fluid level is about at half way mark so not too low.

it definately sounds like its from that area mate. So ill need new control arms then yes?? expensive job?/

depends on what you deem expensive :p

Dont buy cheapy arms, as you'll be changing them again in 6 months.

Meyle kit will cost you about £350, Lemforder bits will cost more.

just done a few searches on google for this issue. Dont think its the control arms making the noise . The only way I could describe the noise is its like running ur finger on an inflated baloon when turning the steering wheel.

Could be the seals in the rack maybe??

you sure its not coming from the column itself? My column creaks a bit in certain weather/temperatures.

definately mate. turned the wheel today and listened on the outside. its very audible, infact its a little embarrassing because it sounds terrible lol.

Oh P.S -
I jacked it up today to patch up the exhaust and whilst it was up i turned the wheel to check for the noise, it did not make the noise when the drivers side fron wheel was off the ground if that means anything.

Hey frazgsi, any noise when bouncing on the front of the car? I tend to agree with aragorn, I just had my steering rack replaced because it was shot. But it didnt squeak at all, it clunked. What did squeak was one of my bushings. It seemed as though it happened when I turned the wheel, but it was only because the weight was shifting onto and off that side of the car. Lasted a few days during the coldest part of this winter and then went away.

Hi buddy, not too much noise when bouncing on car, it does do it when going over bumps though,

its there when stationery and moving. I thought it was coming the column because it does sound like it is form there but as said before its also making the noise on the outside.

Mines got the same squeek which also has a knock and seems to be coming from the inner track ball joint, so going to swap this out and see what happens, im doing both sides but its entirely up to you if you do both or not.

One of the control arms gets my vote too. Had exactly the same symptoms as you describe.

Soak all the rubbers in WD40 and see if that silences or reduces it temporarily. It did on my old one.

its definately audible when i bounce up and down on the car

Spray WD40 on each bush in turn, boucing the car each time. When you spray the bad bush the creak will stop.
