I had mine checked at a garage but was told , check control box then sensors then pump that's the order they say to do it in to narrow it down ,'sorry couldn't be too much of a help but by the sounds of it it's 95% the same problem as mine
I had this problem with my car when purchased , and it's was the hydraulic pump that had gone , replaced it off a seller on eBay £400 fitted but get the control box tested first before the pump from audi very expensive
I keep mine on all the time in my A4 cabriolet , keep it all working and clean , I do keep up regular checks but I suppose it's easy as it's bread and butter as it's my job !
