Ferrodo DS Performance Bedding

Hi Everyone,

I hope we are all safe and well.

I’ve recently collected my Reyland 380mm discs for my car, they will be paired with Brembo rears and I’m getting the Ferrodo DS Performance pads all around.

Now I just await the pad warning before I fit them / get them fitted. Still not sure whether I’m going to change them myself or get the independent to do it. Obviously a totally different brake setup on the front axle but it looks a simpler setup if anything and if I do it myself, I can take every precaution not to damage the calliper paint haha. Which just leaves my bedding in concerns....

My question is what is the bedding in procedure? I’ve read online that Ferrodo seem to recommend 25-30 50% pedal applications from about 60mph-10mph. This is one of my fears, glazing the pads and then me being responsible rather than the indi.

How strict is this procedure and how soon does it have to be done? We have short stretches of dual carriageway around me but to be able to drive more than a couple miles and not see a roundabout I’d be driving half an hour to a trunk road. Is this going to have a negative impact on the pads before I am able to perform the bedding procedure? Apologies I’m new to the bedding in of performance pads.

I just hit the brakes at roughly 70mph down to 20mph about 6-8 times job sorted.
I was not bedding in new discs though as I had only installed a set of new ferrodo pads.

I’m just being over cautious because of the cost, I’ve read you can render your pads useless if you do the heat cycles wrong. Front axle discs were £745 down from £875 by way of a group buy and the pads are circa £265.

I’m looking forward to getting it all on, from what I’ve heard it should transform the braking and it’s not as if it’s bad from factory. Not very often I’ve felt fade with the stock setup on the road, just get quite noisy when they’re hot.
 
Yep you don't want to glaze them, I hope the properties of them have changed as I had some and the brake dust was very hard to get rid of from my alloys.

Apparently the DSP’s are ok for dust, that’s one of the reasons why I didn’t go for the DS2500.

Well I’ve now got a complete set, discs all around and the DSP pads arrived 2 days ago. Interestingly the guidance for these pads are to bed in as per manufacturers recommendation which is light use for a couple hundred miles. Hmmm...
Hopefully they will be ok, the edges of the pad look a bit crumbly out of the box and I was made aware of DSP’s having broken apart of past by my indi.

Did a visual inspection of my pads yesterday and I’m starting to wear through the front wear limit so won’t be long now and I have decided I’m doing them myself. Just trying to find out the torque settings from the main dealer at the moment.

First time for me working on a calliper of this type. The pads appear too small so hopefully the shims on the standard pads are interchangeable. Going to try and get a spare connector for the wear sensing on the rear to solder up beforehand with the DSP’s not having a wear sensor on the rear.

If anybody is interested in these pads I’d be happy to direct you.

Hi mate, If you have no luck with the dealer for Torque settings i can grab them off my works Audi Erwin Portal If you send me a VIN to go off! Just take your time and you'll be fine with changing them yourself if you're a hands on type of person, Few videos on YouTube too if you're unsure on anything as you're doing them. :thumbs up:
 
Front caliper bolts are 200Nm , Rear caliper guide pins are 35Nm. They are pretty much the only bolts/pins you need to undo for a disc and pad swap all round.

That’s brilliant thank you. I have plenty of experience doing brakes, all at home jobs but haven’t worked on a calliper like this before but from what I can see it’s easier if anything.

I’m not sure what I’m going to use to push the pistons back yet unless I just use the old pads.

The only issue I can see so far is that the new pads are too small, it looks as if the stock pads have shims around them but also looks like they are fixed. I am trying to get some clarification from Audi, these pads have been tried and tested many times but nothing I can find online shows the fitting but they are definitely far too small as they are.

Front caliper bolts are 200Nm , Rear caliper guide pins are 35Nm. They are pretty much the only bolts/pins you need to undo for a disc and pad swap all round.

Perfect thank you, great help.. I never torque callipers up, do it all by feel but on the RS I’m making sure I do it right.

I don’t suppose you could shed some light on the pad sizing above too?

Looks to me that they may need the shims. But if they came without them then I would install them as they are. They will still work fine, just might be a very slight clonk when going forwards to backwards as the pad moves slightly in the caliper.

Im hoping to find out if the shims are a separate part. Honestly I don’t think they could be fitted like this, they are nowhere near any surface to ‘slide’ on and would twist. There is a good 4/5mm gap which is big.

I have emailed the supplier anyway but won’t hear back until next week now. There is one person on this forum who could help but I’d have more luck asking the 4 walls I’m looking at now.

Ah 4-5mm doesnt seem right at all. Yeah I fitted Brembo HP2000 pads they had pre fitted shims. A pic below so you can compare overall shape

Yep it isn’t good, I’d be a bit iffy if we were talking about 1mm haha.. they should fit nice and snug.

Yep yours came with the shims then, will be interesting to see what the supplier says. The standard pads seem to have an anti vibration backing and then a shim that wraps around the lot.

Hopefully will get to the bottom of it next week.
 
Lol can’t see what the fuss is all about...

1st Ferodo DS (modified RS4 pad) in my PFL no issues for the length of my ownership.

2nd set of Ferodo DS (pre production set) fitted to my FL in 2017.
No shims, but Würth spray on anti squeal, which worked well because it stays ‘semi rubberised’
You can see the gap in the picture.
No issues with these, don’t forget the spring clips help stop pad rattle, just make sure they aren’t ‘tired’ if so they are on eBay at £24 a set

And the final full RS3 production set complete with shims (ask Trevor as mine came with them).
Note the direction arrow stamped into the Shims, which is similar to the 8P RS3 OEM ones, this indicates with side of the caliper they fit and the arrow points downwards (wheel rotation).

Trevor is very accommodating and should send a set of shims out if you don’t want to fit ‘as is’. However the pads can be fitted as demonstrated with or without.

As a side note the DS 2500 I currently run have no shims and are still silent.

There’s a titanium alternative to conventional shims.
Supposedly better at reflecting heat away from the pistons, good for heavy use and not boiling your fluid as quick.

Pricy for a road car though.

Thank you @T-1000, just what I needed to know. I have been in touch with Trevor today and I have a set of shims coming, hopefully they will fit the calliper.

My spring retainers look ok, I was in between changing them or not but am at the dealer this week anyway so I will pick some up.. be silly not to.

Interested in getting the Ferodo DS performance pads for my 2018 RS3, would you mind giving me the contact information of your supplier.

Did you manage to install the Ferodo DSP pads to your car? I was going to do them myself also, so any additional information or tips would be appreciated.
