It is back with Audi after eating it's gearbox.......new A4 Avant SLine 2.0 TFSI STronic.

Not the best of starts but these things happen. Audi assistance and the dealership I kangaroo hopped into this morning were first class and I now have a 17 A5 until mine is fixed. Parts on back order from Germany so not expected back until the new year.

Was nice for those few hours I had it though!

Mine was less than 100 miles. Not good that there seems to be a few of these failures now.

Stalls, not able to find a gear, numerous error messages and remaining in 6th / 7th gear when slowing for roundabouts etc and then seeming unable to go down the box so it would just give up. Kangaroo hopping at low speed as could not find a gear. No reverse etc etc.

Jeez not good at all and you must be gutted. Mine just refused to select a gear with a message that there was gearbox malfuction. Luckily this occurred outside our house not on the holiday we'd just arrived back from.
Turned out the parking solenoid had failed locking it on.

Yes a bit gutted but remaining philosophical about it...as what else can you do?! Wish it was just a solenoid but I got the impression from the master tech today that it is more 'terminal' than that. Ah well - we shall see I guess.

Sorry to hear this. Let’s hope Audi look after you well and it doesn’t taint your experience too badly

Yes I was also philosophical as, after all, it wasn't the complexity that killed my gearbox but a £25 solenoid. Once they'd identified the issue the repair was quite quick. I just hope yours is...

Gutted for you mate, mine went on the S3 at 7k miles back in August. From what you describe it sounds very similar although mine also sprayed gearbox oil all over the place. Replacement box and mechatronic unit was required. Hopefully you have a good dealer that will take care of you.

Truly gutting :fearscream:and not a great start to say the least, fingers crossed its sorted quickly and with minimum fuss for you, then you can get on with enjoying the car - as you say best to be philosophical but not always that simple eh.

We've just ticked over to 18k miles on our B9 S-Tronic and thankfully have had zero gearbox issues like most on here.

Mechatronics unit replaced. Another gearbox fault now found whilst they did this. More replacement parts back ordered from Germany......the wait continues.

Seems like they just should have replaced the whole gearbox but they'd bulk at the cost...

Dealer billed £4.5k to Audi as a warranty claim for my gearbox replacement, said it would have cost £6k for me to replace

Just make sure that when you get it back, the gear selector has been adjusted correctly. Mine showed as being in park but it wasn’t actually, meant that car didn’t hold when in P and handbrake not on. Was overlooked by dealer as it wasn’t something they would expect to check normally.

New valve body now fitted, following the new mechatronics unit. New problem is that the car will not accept the basic settings required.....much scratching of heads and Audi technical involved....

A month on Saturday since it arrived (and left). Rejection is almost there. Bored now.

I would pile the pressure if i were you honestly. If you’re paying monthly for the car it should be refunded as you didnt recieve a good or fit for use product from Audi..

Agreed. It's a company/lease car so have handed it over to them to sort. Replace (same spec) or new order.

Defo. Put the pressure on as end of the day you’re paying for a car that you’ve spent barely a few hours in out of no fault of your own.

And it is back.....collected yesterday so we start again on a hopefully more positive journey. 300 ish miles since I picked it back up and touch wood all seems fine, tried every gearbox parameter I could think of and no problems so far.

Still has the new car smell as well - so I am pretending the last few weeks did not happen and my new car (actually) arrived yesterday.

Hopefully my last post on this thread.

Fingers crossed for you, like myself I am sure it'll take a bit of time for you to regain your confidence with the gearbox...

I thought the new S-tronics were sorted out these days? Or am I mistaken?

Did Audi give you any compensation for this unpleasant start of car ownership?

Hopefully happier motoring from now on...

I doubt if any monetary compensation can be obtained at all, cars break down even when new. The compensation is you don't have to pay for the repairs...

And back it goes again...

70 on a motorway, big warning sign pops up for engine fault "Do not exceed 1000rpm and get to workshop" pulled over and got to press the SOS button. Nice fella turns up in his van and plugs in a laptop. Yes, he says it is giving me a code for an engine fault that requires recovery to Audi. Nothing I can do here.

2 hours later a low loader turns up, up I climb and and off we trundle to nearest Audi garage. Can't have a look until 9th May the pleasant service lady tells me. Rather busy with service work currently. Explain politely my previous gearbox 'issues' and the less than stellar reliability to date. Very apologetic service manager. Please help yourself to a complimentary coffee from the machine.

Audi have now provided me a Vauxhall Insignia through Enterprise whilst I wait. I query a 'like for like' replacement option. Sorry I am told. Audi only authorise this class of vehicle to be given.

All a bit rubbish really. Can't say I have been blown away by my Audi experience to date. Ho hum..

Audi dealer told me that if car is recovered by Audi Assist to them, they then have 48hrs in which to diagnose fault. I would be waiting that long for it to be looked at. If garage not playing ball contact Audi direct.

Re the Insignia, is that what enterprise told u?

Contact the team that deal with the hire cars at Audi ‭01908 467500‬. I requested like for like at 4pm, they organised a taxi home (15 miles) from dealer, they had no cars either. Then a taxi to work the next day, another 15 miles. By 10am a 4K mile S3 was delivered to the office. All that without being pushy or demanding.

Good luck.

@djjuk You have grounds to reject the car and that is what I would be doing. Sounds like you have a ‘bad’ one.

These auto gearbox issues seem to be all to common with Audi’s. This is playing on my mind as I consider a new S4.

The S4 has a completely different gearbox to the 4 cylinder petrol engines...

There only common because we’re in a concentrated place the actually percentage over all them sold will be tiny.

Thanks all. Slightly complicated in that it is a company car through LEX so having to go through various people to get anywhere. Will update on any change.

Ridiculous! and then to put you in a vauxhall insignia is just a double whammy... I would honestly start finding out what your rights are as a consumer of a good that is not fit for purpose (evidently).

agree with this, as many moons ago when I had an issue with allroad, was advised it is best to speak to audi assist, as get much higher priority than just going straight to dealer...what a nightmare :weary:

And it is back - ECU was replaced. Audi UK were as helpful as they could be to be fair in the end. Frustrating none the less.

3rd time lucky I hope :racer:
