In the letters section of a recent issue of Autocar somebody wrote in:

'More cars are winking their sidelights at me, apparently to let me know that their steered wheels are off-centre to one side or the other'

The correspondent then went on to have a bit of a moan about lights in general and ultra bright LED lights in particular, but I'm still not at all clear what all this 'winking sidelights' thing is all about.

Anybody know?

Sounds like he’s referring to single fog lights which light up with the relevant steering direction to illuminate kerbs.

I had them on a previous car and they’re really good. Not necessary when you’re travelling at any speed but if you’re in somewhere poorly lit like most car parks then they help you see low down where you might hit a wheel off a kerb.

I don't think the replies concerning the auxiliary lights that come on when you're on full lock in a dark place are what the correspondent in Autocar was referring to. I have those on my own car and they can be very useful.

It seemed that he was talking more about something that happens (with some modern cars?) out on the open road, when he sees a car with this sort of light arrangement coming towards him and, for whatever reason, the sidelights (or possibly all day driving lights) flicker when the driver turns the steering wheel away from a straight ahead course.

Anybody else got any bright ideas? (scuse pun!)

I imagine its in reference to DRL's which dim to about half power when an indicator is flicked on so other users can see the actual indicator... Some people just have mad ways of describing things, winking lights!

I have "Winking Lights" of both kinds. It wasn't me that made them like it, it was Audi. Pretty sure most new cars have them now.
