Folks.

I think my head gasket has gome on my amk s3. What sort of figure are we looking at from an indy specialist to change or what sort of hours should it take.

Thanks

Hi..
Say no damage apart from the gasket what would we be looking at... if there is any other major damage then im just going to stick it on ebay as i spent 2k last year on various bits n pieces and id be cheaper buying another s3 i think..

Cheers

Couldn’t give you a price I don’t see the point selling it and buying another you’ll be spending to fix other bits and the same could happen to the new one

Just make sure they change the valve stem seals which is part of the head gasket kit, I didn't - but reckon they were the reason for my crankcase pressure.

Hi.. all in including the valve stem seals and the head hasket what sort of hours would you be looking at for a garage to carry out the work.
Just looking to see what my best option is as ive had the car for about 8 years now and its just a daily to and from work.
Other question is...what is an s3 worth to a breaker these days as i may just cut my losses sell it as is and put the money i get to another use.. i have a breaker quite keen on the car but i need to give him a realistic price that i would accept...

Thanks

Doing stem seals will involve pulling the head apart, which will take the job into completely new territory, just the head gasket I would guess 6 hours. Head bolts need swapped for new ones as well mate,

Hi..
Thanks for the info re hours for fitting a new head gasket. Being honest im just going to sell as is and recoup some of the money that ive spent on the car since ive owned it.
As is would the car be worth 1k or there abouts or is it worth more breaking it...

Cheers

If you got the time to break it yourself you’d get more than 1k where’s as a breaker or sells as spares or repairs wouldn’t pay more than 1k for it.

Lolol....thats what i thought.
I can break it as i have plenty room to store the parts but do i really want to is the question. I asked the breaker to give me a price but he has asked me to tell him as he can only say yes or no..
Probably email him tomorrow and see what he says....
Looking at the classifieds there is an s3 advertised listing lots of parts and prices and it tallies up to well over 2k so there is money to be made bybsomeone breaking it...

Cheers

But when you consider their time in stripping parts and posting+eBay fees they won’t be will to pay much for it
What spec is it anyway?

If you can take the parts off to sell why not change the head gasket (the parts are about £110 - gasket kit 60 + bolts 30 + head spline tool and reverse torx E14 20)? but you may as well do the head gasket and water pump at the same time. ~ £120

I can strip part of the car..i don't really want to get into the internals, manifold etc as once you start there is no going back...
Spec wise the car is standard apart from oversized silicone pipes that were fitted along with new vacuum pipes about 500 miles ago.
New down pipe new cats new suspension arms , ball joints etc fitted at same time. The above cost 2k
Black and silver alcantara interior, bose, cd changer, sunroof, chrome mirrors and the car is silver.

Cheers

If you decide to break it you’d get around £400 for the interior alone

With all that effort, you are near the end. Pay someone to look at the head gasket. A new car will not be as good as your current one. The reason I did what I did is because my engine needs repairs.

Hi guys.. appreciate your comments.
I will get it to the garage this week an see what they say..
I have an R32 and a mk7 Golf also but i kept the s3 as it has been a great car for the last 7/8 years. Once i no whats worst i will then decide... I have been looking at another s3 as i still want one to use on a daily basis as it suits my needs.
Thanks for the help and advice..

Cheers

More like £500 If it's sold for spares or repair.
in a week I'd get 1k for it no problem and that's without the engine included , breaker offers you less than this, he's just ripping you off and really really does need a slap

I was just going by the prices I've saw on eBay for ones that are spares or repair.

Hi..in all honesty if i got 1k for it id probably accept that...ideally more lol..
I no the interior , alloys , an headlights would prob be worth the most .. Then bumpers , dash etc...

I got a refund on the fake ones, eventually and I regret selling the ones I had before them. Didn’t even fit them but seen them
On a silver car looked better than I thought

It's down as about £1700 on "we buy any car" see what the garage says about the head gasket, they put a coolant sniffer on it to see if the head gasket is leaking between cylinder and coolant.

If you're serious about selling it, I have an abundance of people still contacting me from eBay where I had mine for sale.

Morning Stuart,

That is good to know that there is still people looking for bits from S3's..
The car has 140k on the clock and still on original clutch but still pulls well. At some point or another im going to need to replace this along with the turbo when it eventually goes. One of the joys of owning older cars is spending a fortune when parts wear out... I shudder to think what I have spent in the years of ownership on servicing and new components...It just seems to be one thing after another...
I will see if the breaker will give me 1200 as I could put that towards another motor although I will phone my garage and see what he says first...

cheers
