MTM M-Cantronic tuning box

Cant you just find out the design of screw driver and buy that to take them out?

I'll try to take a better pic later, but the bolts have been sheared off. They're completely flat on top.

Just been reading Audi Tuner mag, found this topical article...

I attached the .pdf on the previous page if anyone wants it :)

Still tempted by this. Just need to decide how long I'm going to keep the S1 for.

LOL - sorry mate, the nerd in me ignored that and just went for the installation manual on that post!

Hehe, no worries! It's all good :)

BTW, I meant to ask you. Does your ECU have those tamper-proof bolts installed?

I'm presuming yes, but I'll double check for you next time I use the car (probably the weekend). Feel free to nudge me if I've not checked in the next few days!

Cool, thanks :) I'm in Prague until Tuesday so tamper-proof bolts will be the last thing on my mind :p

Just generally in relation to these tuning options... they cost a few grand and add close to 100bhp to the car, but only cut 0.2-0.4 seconds off the 0-60 time. Is that even a noticeable difference? I already feel like the S1 has decent grunt low down in the rev range, so am just wondering where the real benefit is performance-wise?

Revo recorded a 4.47s 0-60 in their car, so I'm sure that the quoted 0-60 times for the tuning boxes are ultra-conservative.

Fair enough - yes that is a good difference. I have to say, though, I was between a Golf R DSG (4.9sec to 60) and the S1 (5.9) before opting for the latter, and despite the VW sales person's protestations, I honestly couldn't tell that the Golf was faster. As a result of the short wheelbase and so on, the S1 actually feels more frantic. But I digress...

Apologies for the basic questions, but a) do you need to inform your insurer, and b) does it void your warranty, to fit these boxes?

With/without the box is like night and day with mine, and that is only adding 50bhp for £400.
The 0-60 times from Audi were already conservative, and while I haven't timed it, from experience I'd same mine is a 5 second car, so can well believe the boxes that add another 30-40bhp get it sub 5.

The biggest difference is in gear acceleration thanks to the chunk of extra torque. My mate has a Kia C'eed Pro GT - he's got it running about 230bhp - we did some 4th gear pulls en route to Goodwood last year and I destroyed him - so we did it again but me in 6th him in 4th and the S1 still walked away from him (he wasn't pleased!).

It makes the whole normal driving experience effortless, I spend most of my time in 6th as it covers 30+mph and will still accelerate in it! And then when you want to be a loon, it's that little bit extra fun compared to stock :)

Yes inform your insurers (I paid £50 on top of my £220 premium).
Remove/bypass it before taking it to the dealers - but - if they know it's been on there and you blow your gearbox up be prepared to pay (very unlikely!). The issue with the MTM and ABT is you have to remove the tamper proof cage, so while electronically there is no trace it was there, physically there is. With the DTUK you don't leave any trace of it being present (but you get a bit less power, but it's half the price).

I think all of the S1 owners on ASN should post up pics of their ECUs so that we can see if every single one of them has the tamper-proof cage installed :)

That's very interesting, thanks Jose. Unfortunately, given my age, my premium is already £900, and that's with the little box that tells you off for accelerating for the next three months, too. I suspect they'd go mental if I wanted to give it more power. Maybe something to think about for the future!

Yea mine should be about £800 - but when I got married last year they said I could use my Wife's 12 years no claims :)
I got my license at 25 (4 years ago), wrote off my first car in a deer related incident (BMW 135i - £27k claim), built up 2 years no claims paying over £1k on my SQ5, then got married, did an evil laugh, and ordered an RS3!

As you say, give it a few years before you start modding for power, 231bhp for someone your age is still plenty mad - that or find an older woman with an impeccable driving record!

£300/year for me in London :p

I find the S1 a bit sluggish when gearing down from 6th to 4th at 70mph to overtake, hence the interest in more power. I think the S3 with S-Tronic is probably a better fit for me if I'm honest, although I do love the sheer tenacity of the S1. I've owned many Polos over the years, and the S1 is just the best, most bonkers supermini out there!

Yes Jose I got my licence a month after my 17th birthday (7 years ago), racked up 7 years' no claims on my family's little Ford Ka, only to be told by my new insurers that they wouldn't recognise it from my old insurer because there were 4 people named on the insurance... so have had to start again at zero!

I'll have my S1 for 3 years, until nearly 28, then I can look at RS3 / TT-RS / Cayman S as my next means of collecting speeding tickets :)

By the way - are you going to have an S1 and and RS3 at the same time?! That will be an awesome garage...

Nah, chopping the S1 and the vRS in and getting the RS3 and a Hyundai i10!!

Ahh I see! If you don't mind me asking (and obviously not asking for your personal finances), but does changing car after a year or so like that cost a lot in lump sum / deposit / general charges? Or do you get a good deal for changing frequently on PCP?

Short answer, it's not exactly cheap!
But, as I spec my cars so highly (every option) they go into special category of residual value about 10% higher than the going market rate - as I will always find someone that wants all the toys, no wait, and to save ~£8k off the new price. This affords me the luxury of doing PCP with minimal deposit (say £1k), paying the monthly repayments, and selling at a few months old for about the same that is owed to VWFS.
I obviously get a healthy discount from Audi for my repeat business as well!

If I kept the car for 2-3 years I would build up a decent chunk of equity, and I am planning to actually do that with the RS3 as it's so special, and due to the fact the i10 will not be able to do the above trick as my SQ5/S1/vRS as its obviously not anywhere near as desirable.

Ah I see. I slapped £4,500 deposit on mine to get the monthly payments down, but have also specced it highly and hope to have £3,000-4,000 at the end of the 3 years to make the transition to the next one. I like your plan, though, and I think when I have approx £900-1000pcm to spend on PCP (which is, I guess, what's required for an RS3 with 1k deposit) I might follow suit...

Btw that's 3-4k equity over my GMFV figure of £16k

Yeah, I'm hoping it works out for me equity-wise like that. £737 pcm for a (on paper) £53k car is excellent. I'm paying £390 on my S1 over 3 years (got £2.7k discount by taking him a quotation from drivethedeal), so it'll be a jump from that, but not as bad as I thought, like you say. I think I'll also be able to do as you're doing, too, and have a break with no car in which to save, which'll help. Very exciting for you that you'll have an RS3 - but I hope you stick around here with your hints and tips, too!!

This thread has taken an odd turn :)

BTW, QS Tuning have confirmed that the M-Cantronic unit for the S1 is incompatible with the new S3. I was hoping that it was transferable after a new map had been uploaded to it.

Indeed - apologies for the off topicness!

I'll still pop my head in, don't worry :)
Being a mod at a1-forum.co.uk I'll always have a tie to the car.

£900 pcm on car is just nuts but what it is is what it is.

Is that just for the FSR+ box @josedebardi, or are you also including the pedal box for £300?

FSR only, but it's sold subject to car being delivered to skiman in Aug. In the unlikely event that falls through I'll let you know.

Cool, thanks :) I wanted your car but couldn't find a way to do it that didn't cost a ridiculous amount :(

It wont be falling through fella ;)

Ill be taking it. I like the thought of being able to remove without dealer knowing :D

Phoned Esure today and they won't insure me with a mod that increases the power by more than 30%. Sadness :( Pretty retarded since I owned an M135i that had more power and was insured with them.

Will investigate this again in September when my renewal is due. Hopefully by then Audi release details about their official upgrades.

When your insurance is up for renewal just go somewhere else.
