1.9 TDI PD 130 tuning

what sort of power can be had out of these ? are they as easy to tune as a 1.8t, is 230 bhp achievable for a reasonable price ?
 
230 can be had with a hybrid turbo, front mount, exhaust, custom map and uprated injectors I believe. A few people have had 300 odd horsepower out of these engines.
 
the last time i heard a 130 engine that had 230+ bhp sounded like darth vader very naughty.

i don't think id enjoy the black cloud of death that dervs leave behind.

Done a lot of research on the subject, 230 is attainable with the standard turbo with hybrid internals, turbo dynamics do a bolt on with a brand new OE garret turbo with the hybrid internals for pretty much bang on 1k. With a remap this will see you 220-230 on standard injectors and intercooler no problem. The clutch is the weak spot at this level, and the upgrades are big money. If you have a conservative map, with progressive torque you will get away with a new OE clutch and dual mass, but thats no fun
so save yourself the time and money in the long run and just upgrade with either the uprated Sachs or the Southbend imported from the states (see darkside developments), with single mass flywheel.

Will make for a tasty motor. The 8v 1.9TDI PD with 230hp is a torque monster, would suprise a few things at the lights thats for sure.

All in your looking at 1.5k at a minimum for turbo and map, add 1k for clutch.

I think you'd need something bigger than a hybrid turbo for 220+, I also think you'd need uprated injectors for sure as I really don't think they can cope much beyond 200hp.

Something along the lines of a GT2256VK will see 230 though you'd need a new manifold, injectors, clutch and flywheel, map and I really think an FMIC would be essential. I bet that lot would cost the thick end of 2k so why not rinse the lot on fuel for the RS4?

A GTB2256VK with uprated injectors (+25% Bosio R783) will see you to 260-270, and for 300 you need ported head with oversized valves and bigger injectors again (+50% Firad).

With a hybrid VNT17 you can get away with an upgraded SMIC, such as the turborevs, which for £100 is cheaper than the OE plastic crapper, and well worth every penny, even for standard motors. Anything bigger than this in the GTB series you will need a front mount IC.

All of this is information is from several years of looking at products and read many forums and owners of said products with dyno graphs to prove.

As an aside, audi-sport is not that great for the soot chuckers, but as the PD130 is the most common engine VAG have ever produced, and it is in a lot of current hatch backs, you can find a lot of readily available info. The TDI section on uk-mkivs.net, the fabia I section on briskoda.net, the TDI section of seatcupra.net and last but not least tdiclub are awesome resources for all your PD130 needs.

I stand corrected - the figures I quoted were conservative as it seems that there is so much bullshít spouted when it comes to the TDI tuning scene. People claim 200+ from a remap alone which is untrue. I personally would avoid running injectors at their absolute limit to reduce any potential reliability issues.

I wonder what a 260hp 2256 A3q would be like, any idea on the torque the 2256 with R783s would produce?

First 50 Bhp are £500 the next 50 Bhp will cost you few good grand ! For a mild power increase you can consider a bv43 and a very good remap. Upgraded side mounted intercooler(s) will help keep the power and clutch is the next weak link. You can use the Sachs Organic clutch disc + uprated pressure plate and DMF but the map needs the torque tamed a bit under 2000 rpm's. Injectors are the next weak link and wont fuel more than 200-210 Bhp without stupid advance which increases PCP. Race 783 are recomended but they are quite a few quid to swap and balance properly. A gtb2256 won't fit on the car unless you get rid of the air box and fit a panel filter. On top you will need a 3-4 bar sensor and the right map to compensate for it. For more than 225 Bhp it will need rods and ARL150Bhp head bolts. Lowering the CR also helps and fitting larger valves + porting the head is recomended. Porting the diesel head is a bit of a black art, you mess with the swirl ports and the thing will smoke like a motha !
I don't really like the pd lump much(i like torquey VE engines) but i am tuning one at the moment...Bv43, remap and early v6 tdi all alloy intercoolers. Clutch i use it's a Southbend rs4 with modded single mass flywheel... If you're chassing big numbers then a v6 tdi is better suited for that sort of power- 300 Bhp and 700Nm of torque- quattro mandatory !

Forget about hybrids, they don't last and they will take the engine with them ! As for TD, their hybrid only lasted 6k and it's been rebuilt 2 times already ! Buy a stock, uprated turbo off a larger engine and be done with it, finding someone good in uk to do a custom remap might prove difficult though !
 
Adam: how easily does the BV43 fit the transverse PD motor? Do you know what manifold can be used? The stock manifold is built into the VNT17 turbine housing.
 
Kev, i would not even bother with the Bv43 on the transverse engine as it's difficult to clock but if you really want it on then you can use Golf mk3 or Sharan 1.9Tdi AFN manifold. I would rather use a gt1749VB off the 150Bhp ARL engine as it's plug and play. There are also a few transverse turbochargers that fit almost plug and play but they are not reliable for big power and are designed with back pressure in mind so they overspeed whan used with a free flowing exhaust. As mentioned above on the transverse engine getting a volvo or audi gt2056 and welding adaptor plate to the manifold is the best way to do. I would also use a gt1752 hybrid, easy to make off the stock VA hot side and v6 tdi gt2052v compressor side. Works very well and does not need the turbine clipping. It will be laggy though.
