A3 & A4 1.8t lumps

A3 is transverse layout, A4 is longitudinal.

Transverse allows for a shorter/wider bonnet, but limits the maximum size of engine - e.g. you won't get a V8 in there without increasing the track. Drive needs to be turned through 90 degrees to get to the gearbox.

Longitudinal means a longer/narrower bonnet which means loads of room for a V8 or whatever else. It also means that the drive to the gearbox is in a straight line.

So to sum that load of rambling up - it's transverse in the A3 to keep the car small; its longitudinal in the A4 and A6 as those cars also take V8s.

In the picture of the S3, the alu pipe/tube that runs to the left of the block with the little hand warning about it being hot, is that an aftermarket part? You see them on a lot of cars..
