I've just installed a B&M short shifter. Putting everything back together was most time consuming part because of the limited workspace in the drive shaft/housing. But it's brilliant kit, I'd definitely recommended to anyone.

Just one problem though, the stick keeps falling downwards through the pivot (see pic below). I realise there's a retaining ring missing when I assembled the shifter as per the instructions. So far I have to lift up the stick everytime I select a gear.

I might have to find something that sits above the pivot to stop the stick falling or find something and wrap round it. Or use jubliee clips.

Any other suggestions?

Is the spring provided not enough to hold the shifter up? I found the opposite with my kit, was hard to push the stick down to get reverse, took it off after a year cos I could no longer select reverse!

There's no push down mechanism to select reverse because in the facelift version you just select reverse just like any other gear. There's springs provided but it's only for the pre-facelift A4.

i think that could be your problem.... my facelift i have to push down the stick.

So the facelift does have a push down stick. That's interesting to know.

Anyway the instructions does cater for both types, one which have the push down reverse, and one that doesn't. So it appears that there are two types of shifts regardless if its facelift/pre-facelift.

No there's no groove when pulled right up. I think a retaining ring would've fixed this problem but I'll try and figure out another alternative. Probably get some anti-slip rubber to wrap round the stick then clamp it. Thanks for your input guys.

I thought facelift and pre were the same, my mates facelift had push down reverse.

There was a groove in my short shifter that needed a circlip to hold it in place.

My 96 A4 has puch down revers but my 97 A4 didn't :?

I've been looking at quick shift kits fo myine and found VAGtech do one fitted for £140

I lost my clip to hold it in place when I was installing mine so in the end I used a jubliee clip and it's been good for near on 2 years and my kit was one of thouse ebay jobs which I understand is just the same.

The face lift 1.8T do not have a pushdown Reverse but maybe the S4's do.

I've managed to fix the issue by wrapping sticky velcro (rough part) around the stick then clamp it with jublibee clips.

It's amazing how making this simple short shifter upgrade makes a difference and improves my enjoyment to the car. No more wobbly long throw. :racer:
