Nah, couldn't be doing with keyless entry. I'm far too OCD for that - a car which locks itself as you walk away would be a nightmare, how would you ever be sure it was locked? :D

    Well so far I've had:

    8P1 with 140PD
    8P2 with 170PD
    8P3 with 170CR
And now the 150CR in the new car.

In terms of refinement, I'd put the new one between the two 170s. It's not quite as smooth as the 170CR in my 8P3. Whether that's down to it being new and needing time to bed in a bit I don't know, but it could just be the character of the engine and they've had to make some sacrifices to get the emissions down and efficiency up. It's perfectly decent though and I have no issue with it at all.

No, it's an option called "Advanced Key" at around £400.

As I said, the problem with the keyless systems which lock the car automatically as you walk away and then unlock it when you approach is you can never be sure whether the car has locked or not and just have to trust it. Not sure I ever could.

Audi's system seems different in that you lock the car by pressing a button on the handle and unlock it just by lifting the handle, providing the key is in range. I suppose that allows you to confirm it's locked but then I think I'd find pressing a button on the door handle after I'd closed it to be more cumbersome than pressing the button on the key as I walk away, which I do without even thinking about it.

One thing which surprised me slightly is that they're still using a standard key which you insert into the barrel on the steering column. In cars like the A5, they use the fob itself as the key, which is inserted into the dashboard and then pressed to start the engine. I wonder why this hasn't trickled down to the A3 tbh - perhaps people didn't like it? Personally I quite like the good old fashioned actual key but then I'm just used to it

Hehe Vertigo that sounds really OCD. Do you go around your car everytime you leave superstore checking for any dents and scratches?

Come on 400 quid is taking a p.... Audi!

Yep. The B&O sound consists of 14 speakers and a 700W 15-channel amp.

There are six speakers on each side - one in the A-pillar, two in the front door, two in the rear sides (which you can just make out behind the single mesh panel in the pic above) and the rear tweeters you pointed out.
That's 12, then there is a centre speaker on the dash and a sub-woofer inside the spare wheel in the boot.

It is a drawer - contains a yellow tabbard/jacket thingy, which I believe you're required to carry in some European countries.

The warning triangle is in the inside of the tailgate door and there's a first aid kit in the boot, which was never included on the old model.

Very, very nice indeed. I'm very close to pulling the trigger on a 2.0TDI S-line Sportback in Daytona, likely to go for the following options so I'd really appreciate your opinion on them:

    Full Leather
    Technology Pack
    Comfort Pack
    Audi Parking system plus
    Audi sound system
    Heated seats
    DAB Radio
    Aluminium Roof rails
    Interior lighting pack
    Panoramic sunroof

How do you find the ride etc? I've noticed that you can specify the S-Line with normal suspension and ride height (removing the 15mm lowering). I've had an A4 and A6 S-line on 18" and 19" alloys respectively, and found the ride too harsh on many occasions (though you get used to it).

I'm not a fan of full leather to be honest. It's too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer, plus you slide around on it too much. It may look good but it's not very practical. The only exception is if you have kids and want something easy to clean. Personally I'd always go half-leather, preferably with alcantara, which is what I did.

    Technology Pack
Love it. The larger high-res screen is so much better than the smaller low-res one. I love the updated nav, telephone & media systems but I'm not sure how these compare to the standard ones you get without the Tech pack. Personally I think it's worth it just for the screen.

    Comfort Pack
Good value if you want the things it includes. Parking sensors are nice to have but not essential. Cruise control is also a nicety but very useful on long trips or in speed-limited roadworks. The dimming rear view mirror is a must in my opinion, you just can't live without it once you've had one.

    Audi Parking system plus
Personally I think this is overkill. Like I said the rear parking sensors are a nicety to start with. If you have trouble parking then may be useful but I'd spend my money elsewhere to be honest.

    Audi sound system
Can't comment on this as I have the B&O, which is superb. Don't know how the Audi system compares.

    Heated seats
I'll never ever spec these as I just don't see the point. So, on a cold day, the seat's a little cold to sit on at first but your body heat warms it up in no time so what's the point? Can only really see the advantage if you have full leather seats which, in winter, would be mighty cold.

    DAB Radio
Very good quality and you get a range of stations which aren't available on FM, plus info on the current and next programmes on the selected station. The quality isn't really much different to a good quality FM signal so the real benefit is picking up stations which aren't available on FM. I would investigate coverage in your area first though as I think it can be patchy. DAB signals are harder to receive than FM and I've noticed it gives up completely in some places like car parks, although it does automatically switch to the equivalent station on FM if it can.

    Aluminium Roof rails
Never really thought about speccing these so not sure how they'd look.

    Interior lighting pack
Does add a touch of ambience or luxury to the interior lighting, plus the puddle lights in the bottom of the doors are very handy when it's dark and wet.

    Panoramic sunroof
Can't comment as don't have it. Basically I'm rather thin on top so a sunroof would just lead to me burning my head in the summer!

How do you find the ride etc? I've noticed that you can specify the S-Line with normal suspension and ride height (removing the 15mm lowering). I've had an A4 and A6 S-line on 18" and 19" alloys respectively, and found the ride too harsh on many occasions (though you get used to it).
I have the sport suspension which is the middle option and standard on the S-Line. It's very good - firm but much much less harsh or jiggly than my old 8P S-Line. I wouldn't spec the full S-Line suspension unless you really want to throw the car around a lot and I'd imagine it would bring back much of the harshness of before. I wouldn't go with the standard suspension either as it may well be a bit too soggy and I think an S-Line with the higher ride height would look a bit silly with big gaps in the wheelarches. I'm actually driving my old 8P today (still have it for now) and the difference in the ride is astounding.

Thanks so much for the quick reply and detailed comments/opinions.

The reason forgoing with leather is the kids, it HAS to be wipe clean and having had leather in my A4 and A6 it is a must! That's also the reason for heated seats, you are right in saying they are very cold in winter!

My thinking with the sunroof is that it will make the interior lighter, it's a lot of black otherwise, in a relatively compact car.

Regarding Parking Plus, if you order this, you get the Comfort pack for £250, which is only about £3 a month more in company car tax for me. Has to be worth it as my wife will be driving it too (quite a lot) so we will get real benefit from F&R sensors and the visual display.

Really appreciate the comments about the ride - I was fairly sure about going for the standard (sports) suspension with the S-Line - but you've convinced me. I will test drive an S-Line ASAP to be sure though of course.

I have a question about the Navigation with the Technology package, does it show traffic information listed by road/motorway in the area you're in? Also on my A4 it used to show motorway service info (like how far to the next one) on the RNS-E, but the MMI on my A6 doesn't have this function.

Thanks again for your help. You've got a very fine car there!

I've not really used the nav that much to be honest, just a few tests, as I've not really been on any decent length trips yet.

As far as I'm aware, the traffic info works the same way it did with the nav in the previous model, whereby if you're actively navigating, then it will show any traffic incidents along your route highlighted and at the top of the list, with everything else afterward. I'm not 100% sure what order it uses for the remainder or for all of them when you're not actively navigating but can check tomorrow when I next drive it.

As for service stations, I think it works the same way as my last car, whereby on motorways it shows the next three upcoming junctions and, if any of them are a service station (or a junction that includes one), then it shows this info together with distance/time and what brand of fuel is sold there.

One thing I will say about the nav is that the map interface is sooo much smoother than before. Previously it kind of jerked around slowly when changing direction or zooming, whereas now it's very smooth. They've also tweaked the auto-zoom function so that it works much better, especially in concern with the smoother operation. When you're on a motorway or large road and it's a while to the next junction, it zooms out and shows you the map in north-up orientation so it looks like a road atlas. As you approach the next junction, it zooms in gradually, eventually switching to a direction-up mode as you get to the turns and the voice kicks in to tell you what to do, then zooms back out again afterward. Very impressive and works superbly well.

Thanks again for the info - happy with that, we used to find the motorway junction info very useful in my A4, especially on the French autoroutes on the way to Disneyland Paris constantly saying "are we there yet" :-)

I'm test driving an A3 S-Line tomorrow so will hopefully be placing my order after that.

I'm struggling a little bit with just one thing - boot space. I currently have a very nice A6, very well specced (see signature) and of course the boot is cavernous. It is too big for 90% of the time - never even near full - but very useful on holidays.

I guess I can just put a roofbox on the A3 if we are really struggling though - I have a nice gloss black one which will look lovely on it - as lovely as a big blob of plastic on your roof can look anyway!

Might be worth checking the boot space because, on first glance, I'm sure it's actually smaller than the 8P was but it could be an illusion because it's a slightly different shape.

When you do have a look, bear in mind there's a false floor which can be lowered. If it's in the raised position then the boot will look very small and shallow.

Ok I've just checked the nav on a motorway and it doesn't show the junctions any more! It shows the distance to the exit you'll be taking as per other roads. Bit of a bummer if you ask me!

Oh, and my nav just crashed, or rather the map did. All functions were still working except the map was frozen and wouldn't move or update location as I drove! Had to turn it off and on again. Bit worrying!

The standard Sport suspension. Thought S-Line would be too firm and the standard/SE too soggy. It's a very good compromise and rides better than my old S-Line.

I see, I initially ordered S-Line suspension but had to revert to sports suspension because of the delays if chosen, was a bit worried it would look like the car was on stilts but your car has made me reconsider.
It will look good and not break my back when going over bumps in the road XD

Yeah I thought the "standard" suspension would make the car look too high with large gaps above the wheels but the Sport is a good compromise and low enough to not look daft.

Love the interior, alc/leather looks soo much nicer than full leather, but agree full leather can be more "practical", apart from that alc is more comfortable, warmer and looks better IMO.

Not sold on the exterior yet, feel like there's too many lines and angles (like on the front bumper). One thing I like about the S-Line bumpers over the Sport bumpers on the old cars was the S-Line had no rubbing strips and was a much cleaner design but slightly beefier too.

Too much going on there on the bumper - strange as the rear bumper's fine!

Personally I love the S-line front bumper. When you see it next to a Sport, it looks much more menacing, without trying to look like an Astra VXR or something. It's still very tasteful in that Audi kind of way..

Nope.....they had a Sport in the showroom. I didn't enquire about their demonstrator as I had already had a drive in an S-Line elsewhere. The sport had only the basic audio as well, so I couldn't compare the Audi SS with the B&O.

List price with all the options was just under £30k. It's a lease car so I don't know whether they managed to negotiate any discounts on that.
