DPF clean - worth trying or just have it removed, but does that mean MOT fail?

As above really, currently have the glow plug, emissions and DPF lights on and yesterday it went into limp mode. Had the exhaust pressure sensor checked, sadly not the issue, so it's looking like the DPF is blocked. I've only owned it for a couple of weeks and have run it for long journeys just below 2k revs in 6th (it's S-tronic) but it hasn't made a blind bit of difference.

Before the limp mode came on it'd been driving absolutely fine, it still starts fine too. So, is it actually possible to have the DPF physically cleaned/cleared - i've heard from a few 'specialists' that it can't. If I have it deleted, remapped etc i've been told it'll fail an MOT. Don't want to have to replace the DPF as it's a pain in the arse piece of **** in the first place, so what's the best option?

My brother works in a car accessory shop & they have just started selling stuff called JML DPF cleaner & says he's only sold 6 so far but all have worked.

I'd need to check DPF's but come 1st of Jan, all cars that should have a CAT must have it fitted even if it passes the emissions.

just get it deleted buddy, no point stressing out in future and pay big monies for new one. This is probably the best you could have done for a Diesel engine.

I had my DPF removed and it passed the MOT last september, the tester knew it had been done as I overheard him talking to a colleague, apparently (but dont quote me) the emissions is a smoke test or something like that.

So to answer the MOT question it should pass with a dpf delete, unless something has changed since last september

Changes for 1st of Jan 2012 states that all diesels after the 1st July 2008 should be 1.5m-1 or less compared to the current 2.0m-1. I guess it will therefore depend on year of vehicle & what its putting out without the filter.

If it's dropping that low, people with the PD engines will struggle. But on the other hand, I wonder about the CR engines?
My mates Focus 1.6TDCI with no DPF hardly smokes at all.

I'd love to get it deleted and chipped but the new mot rules could knacker the plans and render it undriveable, plus a bill to replace the dpf! Argh, why is this thing so difficult to fix?!

Cat stays in place DPF is a separate box before Cat fitted straight after turbo.

Mine did 1.28-1 last time and has no DPF and had faulty injectors fitted that time.

    Figures were:

    Acceleration 1 3.08
    Acceleration 2 2.19
    Acceleration 3 0.94
    Acceleration 4 1.50
    Acceleration 5 0.52
    Acceleration 1 1.09

    Opacity Mean Value: 1.28-1

Think there is no need to worry about failing MOT next year especially when my car is 07 plate.

Any recommendations for places that can do the delete in Manchester/North west? Preferably not to far from Manchester, not sure how far it can survive in limp mode, plus it's pretty scary!

out of intrest, what mileage is your car

i was told they are cutting emmisions by half as from next year.
i think if the car is fitted with a dpf it will fail a mot if removed

when i was looking for mine,id heard many golfs had problems with them which put me off a bit hence i went for a non dpf model although ive not heard of to many audis having problems with them tbh which seems strange

Has anyone removed the DPF from the CRs yet?

Mine is a CR140, with a map that should be around 180bhp, with a de-DPF, CAI and straight through exhaust that should mean stage 2? My calculations would be around 210bhp?

Do you do hybrid turbo upgrade too? I may be interested. In addition do you know where I can get sports cat for PD170 or do I have to buy full Milltek but doubt they make exhaust for this model.

I think there are a few Hybrid 170's in europe. I don't know the ins and outs on them tbh, so it maybe worth doing some research.

I wouldn't say 'Fobbed off' or 'Told it wouldn't work'. Or at least I'd certainly hope not.

All we can say on the matter of DPF's at the moment is that:

A, We don't offer a DPF Removal option due to the up-coming MOT and Roadside MOT law changes. It is to our understanding that not only the owner of the car, but also the workshop carrying out the DPF removal will quite possibly be subjected to rather hefty fines. and

B, We don't offer any sort of DPF cleaning facility. We have been lead to believe the best place to get DPF's "blasted out" is at a Truck stop or commercial vehicle works. We are currently on the lookout for someone who can clean them out so we can offer an all in 'Remove, Drop off for Cleaning, Collection and Re-fit' service. As you can imagine it needs to be someone local, so we're on with scouring our local business directory.

    Hope this helps,
    Regards, Al.

Yep wasn't you guys who fobbed me off, just said it wasn't possible. Apparently the MOT rules will only affect cars built from January 2012 onwards, does anyone know for definite?

For those who've done it and declared it to the insurance people, roughly how much extra were you charged?

The best price i've had so far is £425 for replacement plus £75 if I want it remapping too, the clean would be approx £250 but i'm not completely sure how successful it'll be, they guy who does it is away until next week so I can't ask him if it'll definitely fix it and I really need it sorting by the end of this week = dilemma!

    Looks like you're right - http://www.dft.gov.uk/vosa/repository/Special%20Notice%2001-11.pdf

Question 2 - have there been any updates on the remapping rule rumours i.e. what's been defined as illegal or whether they'll still be testing?

I'm pretty sure those (like me) with the Common Rail engines will get away under the new 1.5m limit with a DPF delete....

Looks like it'll be fine on the emissions part, going to try to get clarification on the chip part but as others have highlighted, worst case just remove the chip before the test.

But what if it fails the emissions? You'll have to put the DPF back in?

If you do it, all I can say is run high octane fuel before the MOT and put some fuel additives in to try and reduce the smoke

If you do it, all I can say is run high octane fuel before the MOT and put some fuel additives in to try and reduce the smoke
Mine's an April 2008 so should be exempt from the smoke test revisions, though the last one they'd done was outputting 0.8 max so shouldn't be a problem if the injectors etc are all in good order. I've emailed VOSA to find out the rules on chips and remaps, will post back on here once i've heard from them. In my position it makes more sense to have the DPF removed as it could just keep causing problems in the future. I'm not too fussed about having it tuned, just want it to be reliable. I may well be selling it before the MOT is due next April if it continues to piss me off!

i was going to declare to my insurance company that i had it remapped and it was going to cost me an extra 25 quid insurance . common rail engines can be remapped to the same as the pd engines without getting the dpf delete as im sure i seen on revo site that common rail 170's go straight to 215 bhp where as on the pd 170 you have to get dpf delete if you want it over 200bhp due to temperature issuse in exhaust

That's not bad at all then. As soon as VOSA confirm either way i'll have it booked in! Anyone had any experience with removemydpf.co.uk, based in Crewe?
