Will this tyre get through an MOT?

Do you think this would pass an MOT?

The nick you see here is about 1cm long, I don't know the cause (the actual wheels got off mark-free, luckily!). There are no threads visible, as you can see it is the rim protection that has been damaged.

I’m no expert but I would’ve thought you’d be okay, I had a nick very similar about a year ago in the same place and went to get it checked out at my local tyre shop and they did a pressure test and said it would be fine.

Didn’t put it through a MOT though but I would’ve though they’d have told me if it wasn’t roadworthy and got me to purchase another tyre. I’d only had the tyres on the car a week, luckily my alloy escaped any damage!

My (Opinion) is Replace the tire and if the other tires have little Tread-Life left ???

Get a New set of Tires ................

My Life is far worth more than a tire or tires !!!

As far as I’m aware, provided the fabric ply isn’t visible, then the tyre should pass the MOT.

Based on my limited experience as long as the cords/metal wiring isn't visible then it should be fine.

To me the dry flaky bit above right looks like a scuff mark. I'd guess the tyre has been kirbed on the likes of a metal grid, rotating down onto the ribbed rim that protects the edge of the wheel. I've had similar go through an mot. As said above the wire structure of the tyre has not been compromised. Where the lump is missing I'm guessing the rubber thickness is still as thick as anywhere on the sidewall.

Hmmm I said no, a chunk missing I'd class more severe than a cut!!! Quick Google found this:

THE CONDITION OF YOUR TYRES

During an MOT test the general condition of your tyres will be examined and any serious cuts, bulges or lumps will most likely cause you to fail. Before your MOT test, and every three weeks, you should check your tyres for any signs of damage.

Signs of tyre damage to look out for include the following in this MOT tyre failure list:

  • Lumps and bulges
  • Cuts, punctures or tears
  • Visible signs of the ply and cord
This damage will fail your MOT test and could be extremely dangerous so you must contact a tyre specialist immediately if you see any of these signs.

im a tester. as theres no cord etc showing its a pass. That bit with the rim protector is quite thick.

If this passed then a small bit of superficial damage to the rim protector is not an issue.
